Tell us a little about yourself.  I graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, with a B.A. in Illustration in 1987. I got married to a classmate in 1988 and our daughter was born in 1991. Since the book came out in 1999, I have been traveling and talking to students about diversity and acceptance. I put together a website for teachers and parents so they can download fun games and activities to go with the book.

I will be illustrating another book called HOLLY BLOOM'S GARDEN. It will be out in 2004.

What was your motivation behind this project?   The book came out of my own life experience. My daughter, April, developed a skin condition (vitiligo) that made her look different from her friends. At age 4, April was also becoming more curious about other people's differences. I searched for a book that would help explain that we are all different, yet alike. I found separate books; one for the seeing impaired, one for people in wheelchairs, one for different race and so on, but there wasn’t one book with everyone all together, so I decided to create one. Part of my profits from the book go towards much needed vitiligo research

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope that once people read it they will be able to see that we are ALL different in some way, yet we are all so much alike.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My first love is illustration and I think Carl Larsson has a beautiful style. His illustrations are always so filled with detail and warmth. I also have a few favorites from the Children's book field. I think William Joyce stands out because he's also an author and illustrator. He has the most wonderful imagination and he can really bring his books to life. My all time favorite is Maurice Sendak. As for inspiration, I couldn't have done this book without God's guidance. I had never written a book before in my life but I was somehow compelled to write and illustrate this book. I felt guided every step of the way. Now that it's done, I look back and wonder how I did it, but I know it wasn't just me, alone.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I am the author and illustrator of the book, DIFFERENT JUST LIKE ME. The book has gotten wonderful reviews and many awards. It has also gotten countless recommendations from parents, educators and students (see website www.differentjustlikeme.cc). I have been on Oprah, the Today show, The Maury show and all the local, San Diego news shows. The book was also featured on the cover of “The California Reader” and was in "Teaching Tolerance" and "Creative Classroom" magazine. It has even been translated into Braille and books on tape. There is a website to go with the book that has a 5 day lesson plan, games and coloring book pages; all free to download. Teachers and parents are able to use these tools, not only to help explain one child's difference, but to show how all the students are different in some way, while simultaneously showing that they are all so much alike. The exercises bring the students together for fun, interesting, interactive play. Additionally, there’s a “Families Dealing With Differences” page at the site that has ideas on how to talk about differences in the classroom and many helpful web links.
