Tell us a little about yourself. Katrina DuPree is from the delightful city of Orange, California. She is married with two kids, a beautiful ballerina and a handsome sports enthusiast. She loves to read books, smile, laugh, sing along to Christian music, watch for graceful butterflies, welcome zooming hummingbirds in the backyard and grow fragrant roses. She is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she also attended grade school. She acts as taxi driver for her kids and gets to drive almost every week around the Plaza of Orange (formerly known as the Orange Circle), which is a traffic circle with a plaza and fountain in the center of the city. This book is filled with some of her favorite Bible verses. What is your favorite Bible verse?
What was your motivation behind this project? The motivation to create this book came from my own personal experience with diabetes. I wanted to create a book for children (and/or adults) to learn about the general topic of diabetes with a Christian perspective. Like the book says, trust God with your health or the health of loved ones!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope anyone who reads this book will gain knowledge about diabetes, learn to empathize with others who have a medical condition, open their eyes to God's word, and to rely on God to help them through medical circumstances.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I have been personally impacted by working on this project as it is a honor to be able to have a Christian children's book published and available to the public. I really believe that God's word is true and should be shared with others. This book is a prayer come true.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I am excited to share that my daughter was the illustrator of this book at 13 years old! I admire her artistic abilities and the fact that she was willing to work on this project with me is so special. My son also contributed ideas to the book. He and I would talk at night before bedtime about creating the book which were special moments. I wanted both my children to be involved in this process from ideas and illustrations to writing & publishing a final product. While my kids were in grade school we were involved in Battle of the Books for five years. For me this experience as Battle of the Books coach also helped me to be interested in reading, teaching children, sharing the love of God, and eventually writing a children's book. Lots of prayer helped me through the process. I also give credit to my friend Adriene Madden author of the children's book The Magic Maple Tree who had her children's book published a few years before mine. When I saw her book, it made me think maybe I could create a book too and guess what, our idea became a reality!
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: This process of creating a book has been a good learning experience. Writing the book came naturally which was a gift from God. My daughter illustrating the book will be so meaningful for children to enjoy and knowing my son helped contribute ideas is a fun shared experience. The best gift you can give us is spreading the news about the book. Tell a friend, buy a book as a gift for a local/school library, a doctors office, as a gift for someone newly diagnosed with diabetes, or for yourself! We are excited to have this book travel the world.
