Sharon4 Stars Out Of 5DetoursFebruary 21, 2017SharonQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Life is complicated. Sometimes it's messy and sometimes we're not sure exactly where we are going or how we're going to get there. It's during those times we need God's presence and affirmation. And if you're going through one of those times, Detours by Dr. Tony Evans just may be the book for you. In his pastoral way Dr. Evans uses the story of Joseph to reassure us that no matter how challenging things seem in the moment you can be sure that God has a plan, you can trust His sovereignty and you can know He's working things out for your good and His glory. While warning that we have the ability to make our detours longer or get caught up in distractions, he reminds us that if we are faithful, we will find that those detours are the very mechanism God uses to develop us for our destiny. During them we will sometimes face difficult tests. We'll need to avoid grumbling and complaining and learn to maximize where we are at while we wait for what is yet to come but, through it all, we will find God faithful and as Dr. Evans put it "when we finally get to our destination, we'll know we are home". Detours reaffirms our hope during challenging times that God is not finished with us yet and gently assures us that God is with us in the journey, that we can trust Him and that even our perceived set backs are being used for greater things. Detours is that gentle reminder from a wise friend to stay the course during challenging times knowing that if we do, we will look back in amazement at all He has done.
Fitzysmom5 Stars Out Of 5Review From Rambles of a SAHMFebruary 17, 2017FitzysmomQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If you've lived any time at all I can guarantee you've experienced a detour. Maybe it's been a short one or maybe it's gone on a long time. Sometimes they seem to come in succession. Some are painful, some are tedious and some may even be a pleasant diversion. Regardless every one of them are part of the journey towards our ultimate destiny.
In his own unique way Dr. Evans takes us on a journey through the life of Joseph. Along the way we experience Joseph's detours towards his destiny and apply each twist and turn to our own circumstances. I personally don't think I'll ever look at the life of Joseph in the same way. I'm a church girl so the story is almost overly familiar. This was a refreshing new look at God's sovereignty.
If you are experiencing a detour of your own you need this book. Detours can be depressing. And by nature they are quite unpredictable. But this book will remind you that there is purpose in everything. What is going on in your life isn't only about you. God uses every one of us to complete His plan in His way and in His timing.
If you enjoy the teaching ministry of Dr. Evans you will most certainly enjoy this book. It is written in his distinctive voice. I felt like I could actually hear him reading to me in my head. There is also a follow-up Bible study that would be nice for a small group.
I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Often times we are taken aback by circumstances and events that can catch us off guard. It is in these moments that a person is faced with a decision: how do I respond?
In his book, Detours, Dr. Tony Evans writes about how the unpredictableness of life, when understood properly, can be a catalyst to growth. This is not easy. Often times see detours as an inconvenience, a problem, or in some situations a failure. It does not have to be this way.
To first understand detours and how to use them properly we must first come to the knowledge that God has a destiny for us. Dr. Evans shows how the each of us are on a path but that path does not mean that it is a straight line. Detours are mold us into the person God desires us to be.
Dr. Evans explains the use of detours in each of the 16 chapters of his book. From the pain of detours to the pleasure of detours to the path of detours, Dr. Evans gives insightful wisdom on how to apply detours.
Dr. Evans uses the example of Joseph in the Bible. Joseph was given a dream in which he would one day rule over his household. However, things did not go the way Joseph anticipated. He was sold into slavery, accused of sexual assault falsely, thrown into prison, and while in prision given hope of being released only to have been forgotten for some time. When would God fulfill His promise? Had He abandoned Joseph?
Joseph could have easily been defeated and bitter towards God. Yet, God used these detours to make Joseph into the man that would one day be the second-in-command over the entire nation of Egypt. Dr. Evans shows the detours that God placed in Josephs life and parallels them to the detours that God will place in our life to make us into the individual He has called us to be.
This book will not be an easy read for some people because some take detours as a sign of failure or have taken a detour and have not returned to their road of destiny. Yet, those who read this book will benefit from it beyond words. I submit that whoever is blessed by this book will return to read it over and over again as each new detour presents itself.
God is refining us daily and He sometimes uses detours to do it.
