As a Christian woman with a Bachelor's degree in psychology and who maintains an interest in biblical counseling, I thoroughly enjoyed this concise read. Descriptions and Prescriptions: A Biblical Perspective on Psychiatric Diagnoses & Medications is fabulously focused and concretely concentrated on the issue at hand. I found it helpful to formally consider the strengths and limitations of the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) from a biblical perspective. I especially appreciated Emlet's references to our fundamental nature as image bearers and worshipers and how that influences our ministry to sufferers and sinners "...who struggle with disordered thoughts, emotions, and behaviors" (pg. 9). In addition to applicable Scripture references, there are a number of insightful word pictures to aid the reader in thinking through these sensitive issues. Most importantly, Emlet keeps the Gospel of Jesus Christ central to the discussion. In the end, Emlet doesn't offer a "one-size-fits-all" approach but helps guide the reader toward a careful wisdom framework.

*Many thanks to New Growth Press and Litfuse Publicity Group for sending me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!

This book is for the ministry and teachers, it is not a book that is easy reading. It is very heavy reading and required lots of concentration. If you are an educator then this is a great resource to learn how to teach and counsel regarding medications and illness.

I would not recommend this for those that were interested in just reading to understand the different types of illness and medications available. This is a very advanced book and requires some heavy reading. It is a small book, that can be easily carried around in your pocket to use as a handy guide when needed.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through Litfuse. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I looked forward to this book for the reason that I know so many people with mental illnesses who are on medication and not getting spiritual help or Godly encouragement. I wanted to know what a counselor who is a Christian would have to say about this and really see everything from a Biblical perspective. This isn't really an easy or not-complicated read. The information isn't extremely lengthy and was VERY helpful, but having no medical background and really not one for text-book readings, at times makes this book hard to understand. However, the Biblical advice is tried and true, with Bible verses as evident as how we as Christians need to take certain diagnosis and how we as Christians should respond.

I recommend for ANYONE going into counseling, is a mentor or simply curious about how we should treat certain diagnosises.

Thank you to Litfuse for allowing me to read such an informative and helpful book. *Thumbs up*

I appreciate Emlet helping us understand the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. I know some Christians embrace medical solutions while others spurn them claiming the illness is totally spiritual in nature. This book helped me understand a sort of middle ground, taking seriously psychiatric diagnoses but also understanding their limitations.

He covers the problems of such diagnoses, a bit of history, the problem of over diagnosis (such as redefining some behavior the Bible calls sin), and the implications for ministry.

I like that Emlet identifies psychiatric diagnoses as descriptions, not explanations. They can tell us the what of the behavior but not the why. I was surprised to find out that there is little to support the assumption that the primary cause of disorders is a clear and specific brain dysfunction. (Loc. 480/1870) I also like his discussion on relieving suffering yet recognizing God's transforming agenda through suffering.

This is an informative book for pastors and other leaders involved in ministry with others. You gain some knowledge about psychiatric diagnoses and the medications used, helping you interact with those with disorders. Ultimately, how to help others is a wisdom issue. Reading this book will yield some information to help make wise decisions in that area.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Litfuse. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Descriptions and prescriptions : A Biblical Perspective on Psychiatric Diagnosis and Medications by Michael R. Emlet is one of the most practical books I have read thus far in 2017. A small book just over 100 pages yet in this book Emlet takes a counselor, trained or not, through the important and trying task of understanding psychiatric no cheese and psychoactive medications. I myself am not a government licensed counselor but I do my fair share of biblical counseling inside the church. This book has provided me with a basic understanding of issues and counseling which I had only scratched the surface of. This book by no means makes a person an expert in the field of psychiatric for psychoactive issues rather it provides ale a counselor or a Pastor-counselor with a foundation for understanding those under their care who are suffering from Psychiatric issues.

One of the most helpful sections of this book deals with when a pastor / counselor should refer someone under their care to a licensed psychologist so that they may receive medications to deal with any type of chemical imbalance. In the end this is a book that not only will I return to when I need specific advice about psychiatric I know sees and medications but also is a book that I will heavily suggest to all pastors who serve as counselors. I cannot recommend this book more highly, for it is practical in the greatest sense of the word.

I received this work from New Growth Press for the purposes of review, yet the views expressed are my own, they did not need to be positive.
