When it comes to reading and understanding the Bible, a dangerous phrase is used by non-Christians and even some believers: "Well, that's your interpretation." It is true that without some care in your interpretation, you can "make" the Bible say almost anything. Dig Deeper is written out of the conviction that there is a right way to understand the Bible and a wrong way, and the authors show us how to read it correctly.
Dig Deeper offers sixteen "tools" readers can use to get to the bottom of any Bible passage and discover its intended meaning. Examples show how each tool helps readers discover something exciting and relevant in a passage, and the "Dig deeper" exercises offer the opportunity to practice using the tools. The book's brevity and easy-to-read format make it ideal for Christians who want to get the most out of their Bible.
Dig Deeper is not a book that should be read straight through. It is a book that needs to be read one chapter at a time, and then applied to ones study of Gods Word. Each chapter has a different tool that empowers the reader to understand better what the Bible is saying. At the end of each chapter is an example of how to use the specific study skill which takes the form of an abbreviated Bible study.
This book is very accessible for the everyday reader. For instance, when talking about how the biblical writers structure their writing, the authors encourage the readers to look for bookends and sandwiches (pp.42-43). Then they carefully explain how writers use a repeated phrase or quote on either end of a section of Scripture to both show you the purpose of that passage, and what that passage means. In other words, they take a skill that people learn in Bible college or seminary, explain in common language, and show exactly how this skill works with a specific portion of Scripture.
Dig Deeper is also structured in a way where the learning from the previous chapter builds upon what you had learned before. Each chapter can be taken independently; however, the student of this book will learn more by approaching it sequentially.
There is little to criticize with the majority of the text. In addition to the skills the authors communicate, they also give a brief overview of the authority of Scripture in light of our cultural landscape. In these sections, I was a little disappointed with the authors discussion of postmodernism. I felt they either needed to engage the postmodern situation in a more fair-minded and in-depth manner, or leave out the discussion of postmodernism as a philosophical and cultural movement entirely.
I highly recommend this book. I plan on loaning Dig Deeper to some of our church leaders. I think it would be a great book for people wanting to learn more about how to have meaningful Bible study, as well as for groups who wanted to go deeper into what Scripture means together. Brad5 Stars Out Of 5Nice toolAugust 28, 2011BradQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is a very handy tool to help teach a person some good skills to read the Bible. As stated in the book, not every tool is used on every passage. Proper Bible interpretation is life changing. The book is an easy read and the hands on practice helps one practice the various tools. Yet, as the author states early in the book, prayer, prayer, and more prayer is the key tool to understanding the Bible.
BurkeKnoxville, TNAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent Read!November 15, 2010BurkeKnoxville, TNAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I ordered this book last Tuesday and received it by Friday (excellent shipping times!) and have already finished it (today is Monday.) Not only was it an easy read, but the tools are practical and easy to use. The authors even walk you through exercises aimed to help you study each tool they present. This book has excited me to study my Bible in a new way, not just relying on a study Bible, or sermons at church, but my own analytical study of God's word. This is an excellent read for anyone wanting the tools to study the Bible on a new and deeper level.
dking5 Stars Out Of 5April 12, 2010dkingDig Deeper provides an invaluable toolkit for a lifetime of fascinated Bible study. It is written to help you to understand the Bible correctly. We want to help you to dig deeper to find hidden riches in the Bible. Most of all, we want to help you to do all this for yourself. The authors have accomplished their goal wonderfully well. The authors explain sixteen tools to make Bible study effective. Each chapter explains a different tool, providing helpful examples and projects as well. The chapters are brief, typically just six to ten pages, yet the explanations are extremely well thought out. It is obvious that Beynon and Sach have taught through this material many times. Equally clear is their passion and excitement that others engage in personal Bible study.Nothing is new in Dig Deeper. The tools they teach ought to be well used, but are often neglected. Their concise explanations and guided studies make it much easier to begin personal Bible study. The authors also explain the purpose for the tools: that Christians may understand what God means and that they would not read into the Bible their own meaning. This book clearly and unequivocally states that God is the supreme Lord and King of the universe. He is the One in charge. Given that, it should be obvious that what he says goes. The book is aimed at the average Christian, and it is an excellent introduction to hermeneutics. Adults would benefit from studying this book, and it is written on a level that teens also could work their way through. It would be an excellent book for a group Bible study or a high school Bible class or a new believers group.
