Product Description

When the sister Sarah hasn't seen in years reappears, it stirs up hard memories of the past and their parents' murder. Even so, Sarah's joy at being reunited with Hannah and meeting the niece she didn't know she had is too soon interrupted when Deputy Sheriff Paul Gleason informs Sarah her sister has been killed.

As Sarah learns more about Hannah's death, the circumstances seem eerily similar to her parents' death. She enlists Paul's help in digging deeper into these murders the police are dismissing as burglaries gone wrong. Paul's concern encourages Sarah's growing feelings for him, but as their investigation peels back the layers of lies almost twenty years old, they get close to uncovering the truth one man will do anything to hide--even if he must do away with the last remaining members of the Miller family.

First, the disclaimer. "I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, DEADLY ECHOES is the second book in Ms. Mehl's Finding Sanctuary series, but it easily stands alone. I read the first book in the series Gathering Shadows when it first came out, and I am reading Rising Darkness next, which is the third and final book in the series.

The story is in first person, but not in deep point of view. The flow of the story is interrupted a lot to tell the reader details which could've come out naturally in conversation or showing. As it was, it felt forced.

I did feel sorry for Sarah, still struggling from nightmares regarding the murders of her parents almost twenty years prior when her only sister is murdered shortly after they are reunited after being separated in foster care. The deaths seem to be related but the city police don't seem to be interested in hearing Mennonite opinions on the case.

The romance factor is weak. I would've loved to see some zing in it, but it is a quiet romance, slow moving, with a hint of the possibility of things to come. I do love how Ms. Mehl works the faith message in seamlessly. It feels natural and a part of the story.

If you like Amish, Mennonite, and other "Plain sect" stories, then DEADLY ECHOES is good to pick up. The suspense part is quiet, intrusive, though a dark shadow lurking in the background. I knew it was going to become active, but it took a slow pace to get there. I was anxious to figure out how the cases were related, and who did it.

Deadly Echoes is Book 2 in the Finding Sanctuary Series. It can be read as a stand alone but I think it is best appreciated if read as a series. Sarah Miller has settled in Sanctuary to take care of her neice. She finds out her sister was murdered in the same way her parents were. Things begin to get a bit scary for her and her neice. It is hard to decide who is trustworthy. It is a good balance of suspense, romance, mystery, and has a spiritual aspect to it also.

I received the book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was so fantastic. There was so much suspense and of course a tad of romance. Sarah and Paul are perfect for each other. It would be hard to go from a single person to needing to care for your sisters daughter. I really look forward to the next book in this series and any other book that Nancy Mehl writes. I received this book from Bethany House for a fair and honest opinion.

Book 2 in the Finding Sanctuary series by Nancy Mehl, Deadly Echoes, is a suspenseful tale of murder and faith. The murder of her parents nearly twenty years before has haunted Sarah, but she is finally finding peace and purpose as a teacher in a small town. She and her sister, Hannah, had survived the attack in which their parents had died. Hannah was adopted, and Sarah was placed in several foster homes. They had become separated, but when the story begins, they had recently found each other, and Sarah had been introduced to a niece that she had not known. Her feelings of peace and happiness are shortlived, however, when Deputy Sheriff, Paul Gleason, brings news of her sisters murder. Immediately she sends for her niece to live with her and the wonderful woman, Janet, who had provided her last, secure foster home. Cicelys arrival to the household brings challenges, and Sarahs resurfacing suspicions about their parents deaths years ago causes her great unrest and fear. Hannahs murder was just too similar to their parents deaths, and since the case had not been resolved, Sarah starts investigating with the help of local Sheriff, Paul Gleason, and a Kansas City detective. As they poke around in the two cases, someone clearly does not want an investigation into either unresolved case. The author has written a very riveting story with twists and turns and appealing characters. I recommend this book to all mystery fans. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.
