Publisher's Description

Where We See Tragedy, God Sees Possibility . . .

Few American epics of tragedy, intrigue, friendship, and faith will entertain and challenge the soul like the narrative inspired by the events in the real life of David Ring--a boy literally born dead who survives with sobering consequences. Living with the harsh realities of cerebral palsy, Ring faces impossible odds yet stumbles into an improbable life of inspiration and influence in the small, unassuming town of Liberty, Missouri, in the 1960s.

As a teenage boy, Ring finds himself tragically orphaned and being shuffled about to various homes. Along this journey, he faces secret, unspeakable atrocities that eventually plunge him into the depths of depression and attempted suicide. But amid the harsh troubles of life, he encounters another boy his age named David, the son of a local pastor. Their unlikely friendship begins on the rocks, but eventually develops into something extraordinary and unique that alters the trajectory of both of their lives--and the whole town of Liberty--forever.

I have just started reading this book. Since the setting is not too far from my home, I can follow and understand the descriptions made. The author is very humorous and the book starts out on a high note, then goes into detail. Am sure the rest of the book will be as good, if not better, than the portion which I have read. Would highly recommend it for reading and especially so since the forward is by Mike Huckabee.

This is a story about the challenges one young man faced, impacted greatly by his cerebral palsey, and the friendship that drew him towards developing a relationship with Jesus. I will call this a "mostly" true story, because though the author was an eye witness to much of it, he advises that there are some parts of the story that he wasn't present for and took some creative license with. I bought this book as a gift for my 13 year old daughter, and we both have read it. We agree that the author sometimes gets so caught up in describing physical details that it bogged the story down at times. However, the story is otherwise very readable, and challenges the reader to think about what the scriptures say about how to interact with people who are different and/or hurting in a way that makes them challenging to our comfort, and how our faithfulness and perserverance to remain a light in someones darkness can yield unexpected results.

The story started out a little slow but then it picked up and I found that I could not put the book down. What an incredible story and one that offers hope and encouragement to those less fortunate. It is worth the read and inspires one to step up and be an advocate for those who can't always defend or protect themselves from this harsh world.

This is an inspirational true story about the power of God to transform a person's life. I liked how the book was written from the perspective of David Ring's friend, David Wideman. Ring didn't have an easy childhood and he faced his share of pain. I appreciated his honesty and bravery in telling his story. This book definitely held my attention - I read it in two days. Also, the background information and descriptions made it easy to picture and understand what life was like for both Davids as they were growing up in Liberty, Missouri, during the 1960s. I received this book from Baker Books in exchange for my review.

    An Audio Book Review.

A truly phenomenal book I cannot recommend highly enough! I have not had a book yet move me as much as this book did. When the book ended I was longing for more. I wanted to know so much more about each characters past, but also more of where they are now. A more current, more detailed update of each person would have been fabulous at the end.

Paul Michael does an exceptional job at reading this audiobook. I found his voice for David to be somewhat hard to listen to, only because it is spot on and unsettling when right in your ear. Although he is very good at male voices, I found his female voices to be interrupting, and rather halted the flow of the narration whenever his mom or girlfriend would "speak".

Interestingly enough I went to school with a boy named David, and he too had Cerebral Palsy. This book took me back to that time period and caused me great heartache for the way I remember the kids treating him. And he too hung out with the popular crowd and was obnoxious. I really had to wonder if this was not the very same David I went to school with. And it very well could be. What a beautiful story if that were the case. I would like to think my David grew to be so successful in his relationship with God, his friends, his wife, and others in this very manner.

The hardest part of the story was definitely the sexual abuse. I find it so very disturbing, and quite honestly, unbelievable anyone could commit such horrific crimes. What would possess a girl to sexually abuse a handicapped boy? It is just absurd, and so hard to wrap my head around sick abusers such as this. And yet, it surely must have happened to this character David.

The book goes into such great detail into the past its hard to believe the memory can be that accurate. Often there are times that I am left wondering, "Did that really happen?" or have they embellished the story a little. I believe in the preface they did admit to changing a few things. However this only adds to the telling of the story, what matters is how he turned out in the end.

Overall I enjoyed this book immensely, and highly encourage your purchase of this book. Its a story I doubt you will be disappointed with. And I would bet Davids story will be with you long after you have finished the book. Better yet, there is no foul language, which is refreshing in books these days. Even among "Christian" books.

I was so fortunate to have been given this book for free through the Christian Audio book review program. This review is completely my opinion and was in no way influenced by the generous gift.
