Story Behind the Book
"In the thirty-seven years Ive lived as a quadriplegic, I have been forced time and again into the arms of Jesus. Sometimes my paralysis has pushed me down the road to Calvary, like a sheepdog snapping at my heels. Sometimes suffering is like jackhammer, breaking apart my rocks of resistance and pride. Most often, my wheelchair has dumped me at the foot of the cross, and I have rested there by the overwhelming conviction that I have nowhere else to turn. But thats okay. In fact, its a blessing. Its all a bruising-of-a-blessing. Because near the cross, in the arms of Jesus, I have discovered deep, sweet, peaceable intimacy with the Savior. Its an intimacy worth sharing!"
Touching upon her suffering after paralysis, Joni Eareckson Tada speaks with the wisdom of a wounded healer. Her words are salve to the soul, and strength to feeble knees. She does not speak as one gilded but as one trusting in the love of a Father. She writes with rapt attention to detail of who He is, who He was, and who He always will be. Daily readings close with scripture passages and a prayer that will, if ingested and meditated upon, truly set one upon the path toward intimacy with God.
Consider this lovely passage: when we face suffering locked in physical pain, torn by grief, or pierced through with emotional wounds when all we can do is fall before Him and cling to the edge of His robe, I am so humbled to know the Spirit of God prays for me with an eloquence no man or angel could match. The faintest whisper in our hearts is known to God. Even if it should be a sigh so faint that you arent even aware of it yourself, He has heard it. And not only heard it, but He understands itright down to the slightest quiver registered in our innermost being.
One who has wrestled through the darkness can illuminate the path as no other. This book was a comfort to read and held words of hope. I highly recommend it for any longing for intimacy with God. Also, for any struggling soul who needs a compassionate word of encouragement, you will find it here. Suzanne Rae Deshchidn, Christian Book Previews.com
