When Davy Crockett was old enough to walk, his brothers took him down to a creek along with one of their friends who was a Campbell. they got into his dad's boat--and left Davy on the shore alone! The Campbell boy insisted he do everything on his own but little did he know there was a steep drop-off in the river. Davy watched as his brothers tried to warn the boy who wouldn't listen until a man who was working in the fields saw them & sprinted toward the little canoe, tore off his shirt & jumped into the river. He got a strong footing and grabbed the boat & held it in place until Davy's brothers were able to gain control of the boat to turn it around. This is the exciting introduction to Davy's life.

Later in his life when he was about 12-13, his dad sent him to work for a wagon-train owner. So he worked for him almost a year when they got to a particular town on their way back to his family. Davy asked for his pay & his clothes because he was going to visit a friend that was heading back to his town also. By the time the wagon-train arrived at the next town, the owner still hadn't paid him. So Davy secretly snuck away & decided to leave for England instead. On his way to the ship-port, he ran into a different wagon-train owner, who Davy explained how he never got paid from the last job--and just to clarify, this owner was a big man. When he heard Davy's story, he was furious. After asking where the other man was, he had Davy go with him to the other man and demanded that he pay Davy. The man admitted that he spent all the money.

Later when Davy decided to return home, he worked to help pay off his dad's debts. He later decided to marry and had three children. He also decided to make a house in the forest where he made his living hunting. One winter he killed 112 bears! Soon after, his friends made up a story that all Davy had to do was point his gun at a coon & it would throw up its hands & say, "Don't shoot, Davy, I surrender!"

Another winter while out hunting for his family with his trusty hunting dogs, he found a man whose family was practically starving. So he asked him if he wanted to hunt together warning the man that there might not be much game out it being winter. After a few weeks out together, he sent the man home with over 1000 lbs of meat!

That same winter nearing Christmas time, he ran out of gunpowder. He was none too happy about that! So he decided to head for his brother-in-law who had plenty, but Davy had plenty of difficulty getting there. When he came to a frozen river, the ice broke under his feet trying to cross it. He was able to swim across, but then an ice storm came. When that had passed, he decided to mark his way by lighting a fire & partially burning trees along the way so he would be able to follow the trail home. He finally made it home after long & hard travels--with the gunpowder.

When all the river-ice melted, he decided to make a shipping company sending bear & deer meat along the river. Little did they know, a hurricane was coming that tossed & threw the boats about. All his boats were sunk, and everything on board--everything this is except he men. Thankfully, land was near enough to swim to, though they didn't know where they were. They found a cottage where a man told them where they were & welcomed them to stay & eat. After that they safely returned home, and Davy never attempted again the meat market.
