When new evidence arises to suggest the convicted man wasn't the murderer, she's subpoenaed to testify in the new trial. Afraid to go back into that world, Kate only agrees if Tony DeLuca, the deputy Marshal who protected her during the original trial, escorts her to St. Louis.
Tony readily takes on the assignment; Kate's beauty and inner strength made more of an impression on him than he expected. But when Kate's safety is threatened, Tony must race against the clock to keep her alive and put this ugly case to rest before anyone else gets killed.
Melissa5 Stars Out Of 5Couldn't read it fast enoughAugust 7, 2017MelissaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I can't remember the last time I read a book so fast. I could have finished it in twenty-four hours but I needed to go to sleep.
I loved this book. One thing after another happens and just when you think it is over it isn't. My mind kept trying to figure out what was going on. I was wrong on several things but one I had a feeling about the whole time but even that I didn't get the motivation correct.
Kate's story is heartbreaking, witnessing her sister being murdered. She really struggles to deal with this and it isn't until she finally gives it to Jesus that true healing can begin. The way Nancy describes that process is beautiful.
Tony is a wonderful hero who just wants to protect Kate. There romance is very sweet and adds nicely to the story.
Overall, I highly recommend this one. I think it might be favorite Nancy Mehl book yet.
A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Nancy Mehl continues her Defenders of Justice series, with Dark Deception. I enjoy series of books because we meet characters in previous novels and when new book begins, I feel like I getting to know the characters better as the characters develop and the stories unfold.
Tony DeLuca is once such character. He is a deputy Marshall we first met in Fatal Frost. Tony was previously tasked with protecting an attempted murder survivor. The survivor he was protecting, was Katie O'Brien. Katie was attacked with her twin sister by a serial killer and it was her eye witness testimony that sent her attacker to prison.
Unfortunately, new evidence is unearthed and Katie must testify again and face her attacker. Tony must find Katie where she's begun her new life and persuade her to return. Things are not what they seem in the sleepy town Katie has chosen to hide in and it becomes more apparent as her safety is threatened.
Nancy Mehl's Dark Deception is a great, fast paced read that kept me turning the pages!

beckieAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Serial KillersJuly 24, 2017beckieAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0"Dark Deception" by Nancy Mehl is the second book in the Defenders of Justice series. In this one Kate is the survivor of a serial killer who goes by the name Blue-eyed Killer. The Blue-eyed Killer targets women with long hair and blue eyes across the states of Kansas and Missouri. After testifying Kate enters the witness protection system, living under the name Emma and running a caf in Arkansas. Following the accused killers release for tampered evidence, Tony, a US Marshall, goes to Arkansas to retrieve Kate to testify once again. That is when the killer goes missing and the mystery is on.
I love these books by Mehl. The mystery, the writing, the whole serial killer story line; they are great! Now in this particular novel, I know if I were Kate I wouldn't want Tony to be anything more than a love interest, cuz for a Marshall, he's got a big mouth! The story also didn't seem to want to end when it should. That being said, the love story was sweet, the serial killer investigation was good and I liked the characters. I give it 4 stars. SignGirl5 Stars Out Of 5A Never Ending Nightmare of Twists and Turns!July 24, 2017SignGirlQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Nancy Mehl skillfully brought to life the emotions, patterns, and experiences of such diverse characters in "Dark Deception." In the second book of the Defenders of Justice series, U.S. Marshals are called into action for a case involving a vile serial killer. A living victim, Kate O'Brien, has tried to leave behind her nightmares, but that may not be easily achieved. Kate and the lead Marshal on the case don't know what they'll face, but will the darkness lead to healing or a complete break?
There were so many plot twists! I was exhausted just following the characters and deceptive intentions! It is fun to read a high-action book and be kept on your toes and for that reason I would suggest picking up this series!
