Publisher's Description

New York Times bestseller

How do you hold on to hope
when you don’t get the ending
you asked for?

When Katie Davis Majors moved to Uganda, accidentally founded a booming organization, and later became the mother of thirteen girls through the miracle of adoption, she determined to weave her life together with the people she desired to serve. But joy often gave way to sorrow as she invested her heart fully in walking alongside people in the grip of poverty, addiction, desperation, and disease.

After unexpected tragedy shook her family, for the first time Katie began to wonder, Is God really good? Does He really love us? When she turned to Him with her questions, God spoke truth to her heart and drew her even deeper into relationship with Him.

Daring to Hope is an invitation to cling to the God of the impossible—the God who whispers His love to us in the quiet, in the mundane, when our prayers are not answered the way we want or the miracle doesn’t come. It’s about a mother discovering the extraordinary strength it takes to be ordinary. It’s about choosing faith no matter the circumstance and about encountering God’s goodness in the least expected places.

Though your heartaches and dreams may take a different shape, you will find your own questions echoed in these pages. You’ll be reminded of the gifts of joy in the midst of sorrow. And you’ll hear God’s whisper: Hold on to hope. I will meet you here.

Daring to Hope by Katie Davis Majors is an inspiring story of faith, love, and hope. The way Katie writes is so moving, so touching that it was hard to put the book itself down. I cried more than once reading about her beautiful life with the men, women, and children of Uganda. Her story is that of trusting God, even when it seems the hardest. I really have no words to describe the welling in my heart right now as I write this review about such a beautiful book.

Katie Davis Majors enraptured me into a world I can only but imagine. I have never seen the dirty floors of a hut, I have never watched women give birth and then die next to their newborn. I have never adopted one child, let alone 13. She is nothing short of inspiring. The way she writes as a real person, someone that is extremely relatable, I believe is the best part of Daring to Hope. I am going to go as far as to say that everyone should at least read this book, if not make it part of their own library for re-reading when going through tough times.

I will remember Daring to Hope and come back to it again in the future. We all need inspiration, we all need to look outside of our tiny, tiny bubbles, and see that greatness can be achieved in our own households if we so look for the opportunity. Thank you Katie Davis Majors for sharing your wonderful story of hope and your journey of faith in Daring to Hope.

Daring to Hope: Finding God's Goodness in the Broken and the Beautiful by Katie Davis Majors is a touching, heartfelt recollection of Katie's struggle to trust God in the dark times of life. She writes,

"Reality would shatter my optimism, but I would realize that it was only a cheap substitute for true hope anyway. The Lord would take the darkness and make it my secret place, the place where I knew Him more intimately and deeply than I had ever fathomed possible." (page 5)

Reading this book feels a lot like reading a well edited personal journal. You read the true stories with both happy and sad endings of Ugandans she served. At the same time, Katie does a beautiful job of including Scripture and connecting what God was teaching her to those Scriptures. It has so much truth in it that anyone who reads it would find something to inspire them. I would be very interested in reading Katie's bestselling book from 2012, Kisses From Katie, after reading Daring to Hope.

Here are a few thoughts that I earmarked:

"As I'm tempted to wallow in guilt over all that I am not for my children, gently He reminds me that I was never meant to meet all their needs anyway. It isn't me who can make up for all their losses and hurts. He reminds me that I cannot be what they need Him to be --- Savior." (page 43)

"To dwell in the place I have been given. To do the things I have been given. To love the people I have been given. This is not mysterious or far reaching, and yet this is the truth of a God-ordained life." (page 98)

"The pain and the hurt are everywhere. But the joy and the hope that we find in our Savior? They are everywhere, too.... Our pain does not minimize His goodness to us, but in fact allows us to experience it in a whole new way." (page 138)

"I desire to enter fully into the joy He places before us and I desire to enter fully into the suffering He places before us because both can be His gifts to us. Both can be made beautiful." (page 195)

I was encouraged to embrace interruptions in life, to not run away from hard things but to look for God in the middle of them, and to be faithful with what God gives me to do each day.

Thank you to Blogging for Books for providing me with this book for free to read and review.

This is truly one of the most extraordinary stories that I have ever read!

"The same little bird that cannot contain her song too early in the morning is now singing through the rain. . . . . . I wonder how she can keep singing in this storm. I wonder why she sings . . . . . To have faith, I think.

Does she sing because she knows the sun is coming? . . . And I want to be just like that little bird."

Katie has faced down the unanswerable question that plagues many Christians: Why is there such terrible suffering in this world? Katie lives among deep suffering and found the question is not "Why?" but "Who is this God who allows such sorrow?" The answers she finds satisfy her soul and help the reader gain perspective about the greatness of our God. I doubt there is one trite word in this must read book.
