The 36 lessons in the Student Workbook each focus on a spelling rule, pattern, or origin. Level E, Grade 5 covers vowel pairs; possessives; compound words; prefixes; syllables; suffixes; irregular plurals; and more.
The course is organized around a test-study method. Students take a pretest, self-correct and rewrite words, study through the practice exercises, and take a final test. Student lessons include fun riddles and puzzles, and conclude with a wrap-up and review; cumulative reviews of multiple chapters are also provided.
The Teacher's Edition provides a 3-day and 5-day schedule; activities for reinforcing spelling patterns; example dictation sentences for the lessons' pretest and final test; bonus words; review lessons; tips for ESL learners; a writer's corner; and take-it home masters. Reduced black-and-white copies of the student pages have the correct answers overlaid; teaching notes are provided in the margins. The scope & sequence follows MCP's "Plaid Phonics" so curriculum can be correlated. Objectives state the goal of each lesson.
Level E corresponds to Grade 5. 2002 Revised Edition.

Angela4 Stars Out Of 5Very Homeschool FriendlyDecember 12, 2014AngelaQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I like the activities with each lesson and the teacher's manual is very easy to use. After using A Beka Book spelling previously though, this seems too easy for 5th grade so if you're looking for a very do-able curriculum, this is it. If you need something more challenging, either go a grade up or use an alternative. What I like about it is the combination of similar type words that use the same phonics sound or spelling rule. I gave it 4 stars because I've found a couple of misprints and because of the "easiness" per grade level. But overall I will probably use again.

Each week has a lesson outlined with words with similar spelling sounds or patterns. The common criteria that link the list of words are on the first day's work. The editing articles are cute and interesting for my daughter. She has enjoyed this so much that she has been working ahead each week. She is on track to finish this book by Christmas. I ordered a grade up for her and I'm glad I did. As the teacher, all the planning is done for you. This teacher's manual even has practice test sentences and test sentences written for you.
