Product Description

This book, From Culture Wars to Common Groundtreats the theory, practice, and ecology of the new family ideal, this book and how it addresses two questions: What is the situation of U.S. families? And what does Christianity have to say to families today? The authors, whose work is part of the Religion, Culture, and Family Project, funded by the Lily Endowment, embody diversity?male and female; liberal and conservative; Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish; evangelical and mainline.

Discussions range from the massive social and cultural trends that have transformed American families through the contributions of Christianity to Western family theory to a critical dialog with feminists, family therapists, Christian pro-family advocates, and economists, ending with a practical theology of families. Because of its far-reaching and encompassing approach, this work will be a valuable addition to all public libraries and to specialized collections focusing on the family.

Publisher's Description

What is the status of the American family? How is it changing? Are these changes making anything better? What is the future of the family? Does religion offer a positive answer? Not since Habits of the Heart has one book confronted these important issues with such personal and societal impact. This groundbreaking study argues for the creation of a new family ethic that must be central to the agendas of both contemporary society and the church.

The Family, Culture, and Religion series offers informed and responsible analyses of the state of the American family from a religious perspective and provides practical assistance for the family's revitalization.
