Product Description

Provide a colorful, concrete way for your students to understand mathematical concepts---including whole numbers and fractions, ratios, congruence, and geometry---with these manipulatives. Math ideas and problems become easier to grasp when youngsters relate abstract ideas about numbers and shapes to something they can see and touch. Grades K through 8. Set includes 74 plastic rods, sufficient for two to four students; a storage box; and a 24-page activity guide.

Having used both the plastic and the wooden ones I would recommend spending a little more and getting the wooden ones if you want your child to really enjoy using them. The feel of wood is a pleasure. The feel of plastic is not the same experience.

Another reviewer wanted notches on the rods but this makes it less versatile. By placing the contrasting coloured unit cubes along the length of a rod to check the value, the child is using visual, auditory and kinaesthetic pathways in the brain to understand it. This is more powerful than just counting notches.

These blocks were purchased to use with Miquon Math, the Blue Book, but have gotten SO much more use than just that! Each of my children, from age 3-9 ADORE these rods and are learning a TON using them.

It may be a little awkward or unusual to use them at first, but spend the first week or so just working through the instruction book (that has several activities in it) and then start using them with your curriculum. You will all catch on quickly and have loads of fun doing math!

I bought these thinking each rod would have marks to indicate on them how many ones is contained in the larger rods. The wooden set claims to have them, but these plastic rods do not.

This set is perfect if you are thinking about trying Miquon. It is inexpensive and very good quality. My daughter was excited to receive the set and it has withstood a great deal of wear and tear so far. The pieces are plastic so the color stays intact. So far I have only needed one set to complete all the activities in the 1st grade workbook and I was thinking of initially ordering two, but one works fine.

When I read that these were plastic, I was a bit concerned because I imagined a plastic rod that was made of two pieces put together and hollow inside--thought it would be flimsy. When the set arrived, however, I was very happy to find that they are solid plastic. My daughter is thrilled. She doesn't even seem to realize that she's learning math concepts, she just thinks she's playing!
