An in-depth study of the vital principles from the best-selling Cracking the Communication Code now in workbook form.
Communication between couples has been dissected in thousands of books and articles, so why does it remain the number one marriage problem? "Because," says Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, "most spouses don't know that they speak two different languages. They are sending each other messages in 'code,' but they won't crack that code until they see that she listens to hear the language of love and he listens to hear the language of respect." Dr. Eggerichs' best-selling book, Love and Respect, launched a revolution in how couples relate to each other. Now with the Cracking the Communication Code companion workbook, the message of this hardcover trade book can be studied and applied whether for a group or for individual couples. The result will be better communication, mutual understanding, and a successful godly marriage.
Emerson Eggerichs, PhD, is an internationally known communication expert and author of the New York Times bestseller Love & Respect. Just as Dr. Eggerichs transformed millions of marital relationships with a biblical understanding of love and respect, he also turned these principles to one of the most important relationships of all in Mother & Son: The Respect Effect. As a communication expert, Emerson has also spoken to groups such as the NFL, NBA, PGA, US Navy SEALs and members of Congress. He was the senior pastor of Trinity Church in East Lansing, Michigan for almost twenty years. Emerson holds a PhD in child and family ecology from Michigan State University, a BA in Biblical Studies from Wheaton College, an MA in communications from Wheaton College Graduate School, and an MDiv from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. He and his wife Sarah have been married since 1973 and have three adult children.
Dr. Eggerichs spends quite a bit of time reviewing the main principles from his first book, Love and Respect. I think this review is good, since not many of us who have read Love and Respect have completely mastered its principles.
Fortunately, the author doesnt stop there, but gives a number of scripturally-based suggestions for ways to communicate, which any believer can put into practice with Gods help. Coupled with this are many pertinent anecdotes from his own life and the lives of some who have attended his seminars.
The foundational principle given is that we are to do everything as unto the Lord. This includes the way we speak to others. Dr. Eggerichs puts handles on Jesus model of forgiveness and His way of speaking, giving the husband and wife very practical tools to use when they talk with each other. All of this provides the key to good communication, which is mutual understanding.
The only book above criticism is the Bible. So, it is no surprise that I found at least three places where the author used Scripture to prove text. However, these would not lead the reader to any erroneous conclusions. Therefore, I can unreservedly recommend Cracking the Communication Code as an excellent resource for any husband and/or wife who have the desire to improve their marriage to the glory of God. Missy5 Stars Out Of 5Life changingJanuary 6, 2014MissyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I felt compelled to purchase this book with no idea if I would be the reader or if someone else was meant to have it. Less than 2 weeks ago, I took it with me to a family gathering and had in mind to share it with my brother who has found himself, unfortunately, in the middle of an unwanted divorce. He does not enjoy reading books, but thanked me for it and took it home. He has since read through chapter 10 with a report of it being "Life changing." I'm still praying for their marriage to find healing but what a positive step towards emotional health.
