Angela5 Stars Out Of 5Sort of Sassy and RealisticJune 14, 2017AngelaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Louise Gouge never disappoints - For some reason, I read this book first, and then went back and read the entire series - really loved this couple!
Tolley and Laurie had grown up around each other, and just thought of each other as friends, but end up spending a couple of years apart as they got older - him at Harvard studying law, and she at a Denver conservatory for young ladies. Tolley had not seen his family in two years, mainly because of a major rift with his father, whom he could never seem to please - and was partly what had made him a highly mischevious young man. Laurie had grown from a pretty cowgirl to an elegant, talented and lovely young woman.
When they first see each other again for the first time in two years, it was fun to watch them view each other through new, mature eyes, and how they interacted when they ended up living at the same boardinghouse, eventually falling in love - and although that path wasn't exactly smooth, it still had a realism to it - a nice change from books that focus on one big drama after another.
Even though Tolley was a changed man, he still had to face skepticism from many of the townspeople, and Laurie's father. But he kept his focus on being the man God wanted him to be, pushing on, even when it seemed impossible for anyone to trust him again - only Laurie saw the changes.
I really loved this story and thoroughly enjoyed the entire series - highly recommend.

This one is part of her 'Four Stones Ranch' series and tells the story of Tolley Northam and Laurie Eberly.
After two years, Tolley Northam returns home, transformed from a mischievous youth into an ambitious lawyer confident of winning his father's approval at last. But he son begins to wonder if the only way to do so is to marry family friend Laurie Eberly....a woman his father has always liked. If only she weren't so adamant about refusing Tolley's proposal.
Laurie's childhood friend is now a handsome, accomplished lawyer with undeniable charm. But she can't accept Tolley's proposal; she believes it's just to earn his father's praise. First he'll hve to prove to her that he wants her for a wife not because his father thinks she's the perfect match, but because he does.
The cast of characters is developed here and we see characters from previous books. Tolley Northam is desperate for his father's approval and can seem to do nothing to get it. Nor the townspeople's. What does a man have to do to be looked upon with grace? He knows that God loves him, he has a strong relationship with Christ, but why does everyone only remember him as a youth bent on mischief? This book is a perfect example of being still and letting the Lord fight your battles. Recommended.
