Years ago, a picnic basket brought two hearts together. For Rachel and Mike, history may be about to repeat itself.
Rachel Fisher is devastated when the young man shes loved for years leaves her to date her best friend. Her heart is broken, and she has all but given up on love. Determined to keep her mind off the pain, she starts teaching at an Amish school for children with learning disabilities.
Since his father became ill, Mike Lantz has been overwhelmed with the responsibility of providing for his family and caring for his six-year-old brother, John. When John joins Rachels class and she learns that his mother is deceased and his father sick, she desperately wants to help the family, even with something as simple as a meal.
With her parents old picnic basket, Rachel begins sending food to the Lantz family. As the weeks go by, Johns grades start to improve, and the attraction grows between Rachel and Mike. They cant deny that their friendship is growing toward something more, but both of them are hesitant to risk a more serious relationship.
The last thing Rachel wants is another heartbreak, and Mike is worried about providing for his loved ones. Will the two be able to reconcile their past hurts with new hope for the future?

The oldest daughter of Fisher family, Veronica, deals with her grief by baking. Through that endeavor Veronica overcomes her grief and falls in love again. In this installment, Rachael Fisher is shocked and heartbroken when the man she was going out with for four years does the unexpected. Rachael doesnt think she can go on with her heart in shreds and now with time on her hands what will she do?
Rachael becomes a school teacher in a small class that is meant to help kids who need extra help with their various studies. What happens next is a story of a heart mended, faith, family and a womans love for a man who thinks no one could ever accept him. Each novel in the series has an element of mystery in it as another piece is revealed as to why the mother in the Fisher family keeps her hope chest locked at all times. Little by little her daughters are finding clues of something that happened their mothers past, but she refuses to tell them.
These Amish stories dont highlight the Amish life while downplaying the non-Amish and I like that aspect. I like it that characters reflect real people who have to deal with all aspects of life, both good and bad, joy and sorrow, tragedy and triumph. Amy Clipston is a new author for me and I plan on reading more of her books in the future as her stories explore life, faith and family. The next book in the series is titled, The Cherished Quilt, and is available in stores now.

So, yes, I purchased this one for my Kindle so I could read it immediately, lol. I was not sorry, except for the fact that I had not gotten it sooner, Amy really pulls at the heartstrings for this story. I loved the story and I think you will find yourself shedding a few tears for Rachel and/or Mike. As I said, you really should read this series in order and I'm anxiously looking forward to reading the next book. I also see that there will be a fourth book, "The Beloved Hope Chest" due out May 17, 2017. Each one of the first two, and I'm guessing the third one too, seem to be 'attached' to the Hope Chest, so I am guessing we will get the story to pull these all together in a heartbreaking love story that has got to be fantastic and possibly a real tear jerker, can't wait! ! !

I enjoy series that are also stand-alone. The characters are relatable and the story inspirational. Rachel Fisher is heartbroken when the young man shes loved for years leaves her to date her best friend. She is determined to get past this bump in her road and starts teaching at an Amish school with children who have learning disabilities. Rachel recognizes six- year-old John Lantz needs extra help. His mother is deceased and his father has kidney disease so he is being raised by his older brother, Mike. Rachel takes it upon herself to reach out to the family by taking them meals in a special basket she found in her familys attic. Soon Johns grades improve and Rachel and Mike find their friendship growing. Will Mike and Rachel be able to overcome their doubts? Will they learn to trust and find forgiveness? Kidney disease is a subject dear to Amy Clipstons heart and this story will not disappoint! By the way, keep the tissues handy!
