Great Starter Book For Turning To God For Help Overcoming Hard Times
October 5, 2016
Counterfeit Comforts by Robia Scott is a candid exploration of the worldlyways in which people seek comfort and purpose in their lives. While it starts out focusing mostly on comfort foods (ice cream when you're down, chips when you're bored, etc.), it moves on to reveal the much deeper problems that are the root of most of our cravings for temporary relief - stress, depression, anxiety, shame, grief, etc. Robia intertwines stories from her own journey with Bible passages and her personal insights from the Holy Spirit in order to increase your understanding and awareness of God's messages for your life and the purpose of it all. She shares her own methods of quieting her mind and body from the hustle of everyday life in order to be more open to receiving God's wisdom, counsel, and comfort.
This is a great starter book for anyone looking to findinsight as to howtogain freedom fromearthly substitutes for things only God can provide. It doesn't matter ifyou are a new Christian (or considering it) or ifyou believe in God but feel that somehow you aren't as close to Him as you'd like to be - either way, thesuggestions presented will help strengthen your bond with God and help you feel more confident of your ability to find and follow His plan for your life. Whether you are battling eating disorders, alcohol, depression, insecurity, shame, identity issues, chronic busyness,or even relationship problems, this book offers great insight and encouragement for the long journey ahead. It is not a workbook, and it's alsonot a difficult read; this means that for everyone who feels they need to start "somewhere" but has no idea where or how to do this, this book would be a wonderful tool and asset. 5/5 stars.

A Chosen book, Counterfeit Comforts has some great list of 'foot traps', and great quotes to lift you over and out of them. Each chapter has a good centering quote as a header, scripture, and focuses on how to win even against your own human nature. Chosen.
Scott thought having it all would lead to a fulfilling life. But successful dancing and acting careers left her feeling unfilled. She even tried New Age spirituality and self-help books. Nothing took away that need for Someone bigger than herself. Then she became a Christian.
Scott shares her own experience of still struggling with bulimia, a remnant from her teenage dancing days. Crying out to God, she sensed Him telling her she had too many counterfeit comforts. When she experienced disappointment or discomfort, she did not run to the Holy Spirit for comfort but something else, usually food.
Scott shares with us how we can be set free from those things that deceive and control us. She writes about choices, the Holy Spirit giving us opportunities to decide. She realized God was not going to make the decisions for her but He would be right along side her. She recommends journaling and being transparent with God. She shares her on the floor times when she is open to God, asking Him to show her the roots of her behavior. She includes teaching on spiritual warfare, the process of spiritual growth and the tools we have been given.
I really liked this book. Scott is very practical with her suggestions for spiritual growth and healing. She shares many of her own experiences so we have an idea of how the process works. I highly recommend this book to those who want to know how to recognize counterfeit comforts and deal with them. You'll find great encouragement and good strategy here.

Robia Scott's book Counterfeit Comforts is a must-read for every Christian!
As a Christian suffering with depression and anxiety for many years, I sought counsel from pastors and other lay leaders, but they did not have real answers for me. They directed me to secular help and medication, and comforted me by telling me many other Christians also deal with these afflictions. That just never set well with me! I knew in my heart that God had answers for me and they are in this book! Robia Scott's writing style feels like you have a friend right there beside you, walking you through the Biblical steps to freedom. She uses scripture and her real-life experiences to help you learn how to use the tools God has provided believers to live the abundant life Jesus came to give (John 10:10). Get this book for yourself and for anyone you know who knows there has to be more to this life than what they are currently living!
I could not put this book down! I first heard about this book in the church I attend! I heard how I needed to read it as it would be life-changing. I saw the cover and thought, "I am a confident man who can read a book with make up on the cover!" ok I did not think that but wasn't going to let that stop me from reading a book that would change my life. All the hype was true...this book has helped me so much! I am a new Christian and had so many questions that were unanswered until I read it. Not only that, I had a lot of counterfeit comforts in my life that I was unaware of and how they were keeping me in my own prison. I felt like I was dead, but now I am alive and excited to start the the next chapter in my life! It was easy reading and I literally could not put it down. So....the moral of the story? Life-changing for sure!
