Product Description

Today, churches are increasingly placing their confidence in Christian psychology as the answer to their need for the ministry of counseling. But counseling is not primarily the work of the professional: it is a crucial way for believers in Christ to demonstrate biblical love toward one another within a gospel-centered, truth-driven, and grace-dispensing church environment. That is the main point of this book.

Solidly rooted in the belief that the Scriptures are sufficient for every soul-related struggle in life, and totally committed to the truth that the Holy Spirit is competent to accomplish the work of sanctification, this paradigm-shifting book will challenge every believer.

In his companion work, Counsel Your Flock, Paul concentrated on the role that teaching shepherds have in leading God's people to spiritual maturity by faithfully equipping them for effective ministry. Here he biblically presents, and thoroughly defends, every believer's responsibility to work toward God's goal to conform us to the image of His Son-a goal that will not be reached apart from a targeted form of discipleship, most often referred to as "counseling."

With all the attacks against the Christian faith and the supremacy of God's word, Paul Tautges does a masterful job in his biblical theology of personal discipleship. I would highly recommend this book for all Christians who desire to walk intimately and confidently with our risen Savior. Paul's keen insight into God's holy and infallible word was truly a blessing to me!

Author/Artist Review

Author: Paul Tautges
Located in: Plymouth, WI
Submitted: February 09, 2009

Tell us a little about yourself.  I have been happily married to Karen for over 22 years. Together we enjoy raising our nine children to love Jesus by walking by His grace according to His Word. I have been the pastor of Immanuel Bible Church in Sheboygan, Wisconsin since 1992 and am also a biblical counselor certified with NANC and IABC.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I am convinced that for too long we as Christians have not understood God's intention for counseling as a natural part of discipleship in the local church. Biblical counseling is not for the professional, but for every believer as we grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope that God's people will be strengthened and encouraged to get involved in each others' lives by discipling one another with the Word of God.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  My conviction concerning the sufficiency of the Scriptures and the life-transforming power of the Holy Spirit has been strengthened. I have also grown in my love for the local church and my belief that it is God's intended sphere for discipleship counseling.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Jerry Bridges, John MacArthur, Steve Lawson, Jay Adams, Wayne Mack, the Puritans, C.J. Mahaney, John Piper, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, David Powlison, C.H. Spurgeon, David Wells, A.W. Tozer, and others.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  “This book gets it right! Comprehensive and convincing. Those who preach, teach, or counsel regularly are sure to benefit greatly from this helpful resource.” John MacArthur, Pastor-Teacher, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, CA “Paul Tautges brings the biblical command for discipleship right back to the local church and to all believers. He takes the word ‘counseling,’ a word often perceived as only for professionals and helps to reduce that fear and encourages them to fulfill their responsibility by uniquely redefining it biblically as intensely focused and personal discipleship.” Dr. Ron Allchin, Biblical Counseling Center near Chicago “Paul Tautges’ book is readable, accessible, practical and biblical. Loaded with information and application this is an excellent workbook for all Christians.” Dr. Jim Winter, UK Pastor and Counselor “This is not a ‘trendy book’ like so many, blown about by the prevailing evangelical winds. Rather, here is an anchor for authentic ministry that will stimulate real spiritual growth in God’s people. May the Lord set an open door before this book and use it to affect the lives of many.” Dr. Steven J. Lawson, Senior Pastor, Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, Mobile, AL “Like their pastors, most Christians have adopted a professionalized or psychologized view of counseling that naturally excludes uneducated laity. This is why I believe this book, Counsel one another, addresses a serious deficiency in the discipleship ministry of Christians within the church. It advocates a radical departure from the status quo and a return to an authentic personal ministry of the Word among Christians through discipleship-counseling. It effectively lays the theological foundation for Christians regaining the New Testament priority of addressing personal soul troubles with biblical counsel.” Dr. John D. Street, Graduate Program in Biblical Counseling, The Master’s College and Seminary, Santa Clarita, CA
