Cottage Press' Primer One Teaching Helps is designed to be used alongside the (not-included) Primer One Autumn, Primer One Winter, and Primer One Spring student books (all sold-separately). This teacher's guide includes twelve weekly lessons for each of those books with each weekly lesson covering four days of work. Lessons open with a poetry or prose selection that becomes the heart of the lesson; this is followed by copybook & dictation exercises, a section for supplemental Spelling, Grammar, and Word Usage exercises, and finally a nature study assignment. Lessons are formatted with daily copybook exercises and a brief grammar or phonics review exercise in addition to narration exercises on Days 1 and 3, a nature lesson study on Day 2, and a picture study lesson on Day 4. Answers are given if needed.
Cottage Press is a classical liberal arts curriculum that immerses students in the great books and great ideas of Western Civilization.
The full Cottage Press Primer 1 course is comprised of the Primer 1 Teaching Helps Book, plus the Autumn Primer, Winter Primer, and Spring Primer (all components sold-separately). Using a gentle Charlotte Mason style approach, weekly copybook and narration selections from classic children's literature, poetry, and Scripture (along with nature and art study lessons) help hone students' powers of observation, description, and attention to detail. This primer series will help prepare early elementary students in preparation for more rigorous grammar and composition instruction in late elementary, middle and high school.
The Autumn, Winter, and Spring Primers are sequential in skills; familiarity with concepts from the preceding book is assumed. Before beginning Primer One, a student should have achieved beginning spelling and phonics proficiency, be ready for beginning chapter books, and be able to copy words and sentences. Primer One is generally appropriate for 2nd-3rd grade students but could be used effectively by older students as well.
