I received this copy of Tyndale's "Cornerstone Biblical Commentary Ezra-Nehemiah Esther" for review. At the beginning of each Bible book there is an introduction giving more insight on the author, date and location of writing, history, themes, style of writing and outline. I really liked the section titled "Alleged Historical Problems" because the authors don't shy away from the tough questions. The Esther story has been retold a thousand times, so I was surprised to learn new information. For instance, Xerxes asks his "wise advisers" how to handle the Vashti situation per the Persian laws and customs but they don't quote any Persian laws to the King. Instead, they give him their husbandly opinion of "women everywhere will begin to despise their husbands" and turned an embarrassing incident with the king into a national crisis among all men. Within the pages, the verses of the Bible book are printed along with the insightful commentary on each verse so you don't have to flip back and forth between the two books. Every verse has some commentary that either explains a word, phrase, location, etc. It also uses the New Living Translation which was a real eye-opener.The NLV is the only translation that is explicit about what really happened before the King took a wife. Esther 2:12 translates "Before each young woman was taken to the king's bed, she was given the prescribed twelve months of beauty treatments." I didn't know the King slept with all the women before he made his decision. You're not going to find Strong's Concordance references or a litany of Greek pronunciation/definitions but I do think students, professors, preachers and serious students of the Bible would enjoy it and should include it in their library along with the other 17 volumes. I also think the average person who is looking for a more thorough study of specific books of the Bible, would appreciate this book and its unique approach.

This is a biblical commentary book on the Books of the Bible for Ezra-Nehemiah and Ester, it is in the New living Translation. This book has a good structure that makes it easy to follow and read. This version is volume 5B of a full set. Each book is explained in detail by author, date of writing, occasion of writing, audience, canonicity and textual history, literary style, major themes and an outline. The commentary is detailed by explaining verse by verse, it give the verse then the explanation directly after the verse. I was very impressed with the set up of the book and the easy flow of the context. It was very easy to find the verses and if you were looking for a certain verse you could easily thumb through and find it very quickly. I would recommend this volume to others and look forward to purchase other volumes of the set.To comply with new regulations introduced by the Federal Trade Commission,Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book or ARC.
