I read it straight thru as a book with my Bible at my side. Although you really would not need to have it because the verses are in the text which is really helpful. I have been using other commentaries and so far I have not come across one that is as helpful and readable as this one. I am really pleased with my purchase of this commentary and am eagerly waiting to start my next John MacArthur commentary.
