The indispensable MacArthur Commentary on the New Testament emphasizes both an explanation and application of Scripture by an examination of the text that seeks to illuminate broad doctrinal themes in the service of God's people. Each passage is related to other passages of Scripture dealing with similar themes, and when necessary draws in linguistic questions to further support adequate exposition of the text-though these are never technical.
Sharp, clear outlines are provided for each section of the biblical book and guide the commentary discussion throughout each volume in the series. Commentary sections comprise periscopes of Scripture (e.g., 2 Timothy 1.1-5) and key words/phrases are highlighted in bold.
The MacArthur New Testament Commentary comes from the experience, insight, and wisdom of one of the most trusted ministry leaders and Bible teachers of our day. Each volume was written to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible, dealing thoroughly with every key phrase and word in the Bible without being unduly technical. This series helps provide a better, fuller, and richer understanding of God's word while challenging all readers-no matter what their expertise-to grow in a vibrant, personal spiritual walk.

The church at Corinth was a church with problems not unlike those that many churches face today. These issues included worldliness; spiritual disunity; sexual sin; and questions about marriage and divorce, the role of women, and spiritual gifts. Pastors and laypeople alike will benefit greatly as they explore the real-life richness of this epistle.
Join John MacArthur as he explains each verse in a way that is both doctrinally precise and intensely practical. Taking into account the cultural, theological, and Old Testament contexts of each passage, MacArthur tackles interpretive challenges and fairly evaluates differing views, giving the reader confidence in his conclusions.

Scott Conners3 Stars Out Of 5July 7, 2010Scott ConnersI purchased this commentary based in part on the good reviews, and also on my general appreciation for John Macarthur's preaching and writing. I have found the commentary helpful and insightful in many ways, but have to say that his handling of the section on spiritual gifts reads and feels much different than the rest of the commentary. Usually I find Macarthur lets the text make the points, but in this instance, he labors his points and somehow tries to get the text to support them. Arguments from silence especially detract from his credibility of interpretation in this area. A person would be hard pressed to arrive at the conclusions he sets forth, just by reading the Scripture. Uncharacteristic and disappointing, in an otherwise helpful work.
S. Barnette1 Stars Out Of 5May 17, 2010S. Barnette"He denies the possibility of modern uses of the spiritual gifts while affirming those gifts given to all Christians. This is typical translate-as-long-as-it-agrees-with-your-personal-theology. Paul, throughout 1 Corinthians 14 affirms his personal participation in what MacArthur "denies [as] the possibility of modern uses." Yet nowhere in the Scriptures or Church History is this affirmed.
