Our Sunday School Class is just finishing one of the Women of Faith series, "Encouraging One Another"...and we were looking for our next book when we found "Contagious Joy". We looked at the Table of Contents and decided this should be our next book to study. We're anxious to begin...our class is called The "JOY" Class...J-Jesus first, O-Others 2nd, and
Everyone in my women's small group voiced disappointment with this book. We collectively felt that there was no cohesion between the bible versus selected, other than the fact that they all spoke about joy. No one felt a connection to the book. There were not many practical ideas as to how one could see or feel more joy in their lives as there was no connection with the bible verses used. Also, we all felt there should have been more explanatory text.
I was very excited to start a new study, but was disappointed about how this was only an "above-surface" study. What I mean by that is 1.) the questions guide you to look for specific verses, 2.) there is no in depth reflection or though-provoking investigation. It's almost like a poor form of homework. Here's the question and find the answer. By chapter 3, I was honestly bored. If I had to spend money on a bible study/guide, I would much rather prefer one that raises the bar and challenges me to make interpretations, reflections, and connections.
