Publisher's Description

Having forfeited his youth to the state prison system, Michael moved back to the only home he'd ever known. An empty shell of a man who now lived--if it could be called living--in the still vacant house of his parents in a town with one stoplight. A town that hated him. Had always hated him. And was ready to pick up where the prison system had let off.

Now he's on the run from men who've tried to kill him once; but Michael is more than an ex-con. A powerful, sinister force creeps inside him, threatening and destructive. Who--and what--it will destroy next is the only real question. From the bold voice that brought readers down Purgatory Road comes a new pulse-pounding, spine-rattling tale of vengeance and justice that will have them up all night.

Ok, Ill admit that, even though I thoroughly enjoy a great suspense novel (Have enjoyed Stephen King and Dean Koontz for years), I never could totally wrap my hands around this one. I tried seeing this from a good vs evil viewpoint, but that was even hard to do at times. The main character is surrounded by hate and evil and the guys in the town that tried killing him werent any better. I kept waiting for that intersection of all of this evil with a redemption plot and an introduction of a good character to help Michael weave through all of the anger. Alas, I never did find that. From a secular standpoint, this novel is full of all of the normal triggers that would make you enjoy it from start to finish. From a biblical/spiritual standpoint, I think this is one you should stay away from. If you want to read it, just keep in mind that there is no battle here, just evil showing that it can win some of the time.

Is this a "guy's book"? It does have suspense and intrigue but it also has a lot of darkness. Be careful with this one.

I remember back in the 80's when Cabbage Patch Kids were all the rage. There were riots over those things! Were they ugly or cute? It seemed like no one could quite make up their mind. This is how I feel about "Cold Water" by Samuel Parker. Was it good or not? Can't decide.

At first, I was enthralled but about 3/4 of the way through, the redundant nature of the writing started to wear thin. The story line had so much potential but instead of exploring the nuances of each new discovery, the author replayed the inner workings of everyone's mind. Especially the main character's. Not only that, unless a paragraph was strictly moving the plot forward, it felt like one sentence told 3 or 8 different ways.

    For example:

There was no escaping it. It was inevitable. The choice he had made as a child was a constant variable in each and every action he would commit. The world would not allow otherwise. He would never be able to wipe the slate clean and start as a new creature untainted by past crimes, just as the spider hatchling would never question the devouring appetite that spurred it on in its feast.

The future was set in stone. Hardwired.

Written alone, the above paragraph might not seem so bad but look at it again. And then imagine this sort of redundant writing on every other page of the book. And always about how dark and inescapable the past is.

I also finished the book thinking - What did I just read? I felt that way after reading another of Samuel Parker's books, "Purgatory Road". It's as though he's trying too hard to be allegorical. When the characters were actually doing something or interacting with each other, it was great. I suppose that's why I'm back to the whole Cabbage Patch Kid dilemma. Was it good or not?

I guess I'll let you decide but I can't completely recommend this book. It just didn't quite hit the nail on the head.

I did not want to put this book down. This had a lot of twists and turns. At first I wasnt sure if I cared for any of the characters. Because none of them seemed real likable. This did change and I did end up liking some characters. I liked the suspense and the little bit of paranormal. I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Coldwater, written by Samuel Parker, is a very intense dark thriller. The story starts out very slow and I kept wondering what was going on, but once I got into it, I found it hard to put down.

With the addition of twins in his family, Michael finds his parents to busy and to tired to give him the attention he needs. At just 10 years of age his parents leave him to watch his younger siblings and he orchestrates his brother's death. He is put in a high security prison with adults. His father dies, his mother loses touch with reality and his aunt takes his sister away to never talk about what happened.

Now Michael is back home and a group of men, lead by Haywood, take it upon themselves to get rid of Michael. When the attempt on his life fails, they find themselves on a search through the backwoods trying to find him before he brings harm to them. After days of searching for him and many different bad things happen, the men helping Haywood decide they don't want any more to do with the situation. They feel they should not have attempted to kill Michael in the beginning.

The story is not what I would have chosen to read had a little more information of the story been available. Once I got in to it, I found it very hard to put down. Being published by a Christian publishing company, I was expecting a story with a little inspirational. While this story does have a Christian message of redemption, the story is so intense, it may be overlooked.

This is a very dark violent, story. It is fast moving, well written story, with a lot of characters. The author leaves questions unanswered, leaving me to wonder if there will be a sequel. While this story is very well written, I would only recommend it to those who enjoy dark stories full of danger.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, this is my honest review.

This novel definitely packs action after action into its pages. It starts with chilling suspense and the adrenaline keeps pulsating with each scene. The haunting narrative leaves a chilling effect. The topic and plot were not to my taste, but that does not detract from the skill of this author. I also found the content a bit dark for Christian fiction. I am not certain I would read this book again and I think it takes a unique audience to appreciate it. Nonetheless, if this is your kind of genre, I think you would enjoy this book!
