    This was a great read! Dr. Colbert is very interested in providing patients with great, simple information to take care of themselves with. The only hard part is sticking with it, but it works if you do and the carb cravings eventually subside! i say Eventually! Sugar is just addictive for me and i want it regardless if there is a craving or not! I can even shed weight with minimal exercise with this plan. Im just not big on exercise. Im just a walker and prefer my exercise to just be a daily 20-30 minute walk.

    If you're new to the diet scene and have no other diet experience then this book will provide you with a good start. For those of us who are on our umptienth diet attempt with numerous books under our belt then you will need to read through numerous chapters of filler material meant to sell the reader on the need for this diet approach and its winning points. That is, the real meat and potatoes (oops sorry, skip those taters) of the book come way too late for my taste. Basically you're directed to eat more fat (70%), less protein (20%) and little in the way carbohydrates (10%). The sources of carbohydrates are well known to any experienced dieter (think greens, cold crop types like broccoli, kale, etc.). You will probably be surprised at how few fruits are allowed (think berries like blue berries, strawberries, raspeberries, etc.). Be prepared for the sales pitch for supplements like (MCT Oil, Ketosis strips, multivitamins, probiotics, etc.) and other products meant to reduce the body's attempt to convert food to fat storage and to increase good gut health. Don't get me wrong, as his advice (similar to other diets) correctly turns the reader away from high glycemic/loading foods that are making people fat and worse. In my humble opinion the diet will work and if combined with healthy exercise (as he prescribes) you should see success. I was disappointed with how far into the book you had to read before getting to the information you truly need to implement. Disappointing was how few recipes were provided. Maybe his follow up book is more to the point? Just know that there are numerous free websites for the Keto Zone diet with far more information to get you up and running much faster.

    I have read a lot of diet books over the years. Most start by extolling the health benefits of their particular eating plan, which is always convincing. Okay, so most of them sensibly focus on the importance of prioritising fresh fruit and vegetables over processed food (as an aside, this is one of my biggest issues with a lot of vegan and vegetarian foodits highly processed. I cant believe eating a highly processed GM soy product is can be healthier than eating grass-fed meat, or ocean-caught fish).

    Typical diet books then move onto the specifics of the eating plan, complete with recipes. And thats where the ones Ive read fall down: the recipes are usually for a family of, but Im the only one on the diet. Yes, I guess the logic of the four-person recipes is that no one wants to cook themselves separate food to the rest of the family. But it means that the diet recipes have to suit everyone in the family and they never do. Ive tried.

    The Keto Zone Diet is the same, but different.

    Yes, preaches the benefits of the keto eating plan, it emphasises fresh food, and it includes a handful of recipes. But its not prescriptive, which means its easier to follow, and easier to integrate into a family.

    What is a keto zone diet?

    Put simply, the idea is that the low-fat and low-calorie diets dominating the industry dont work (as anyone caught on the diet-weight gain treadmill knows). The Keto Zone diet is a variation of the famed Atkins diet, which focuses on losing weight by limiting carbohydrate intake and eating moderate amounts of fat. Fat makes us feel full, while limiting carbs help us not to feel hungry between meals.

    In practice, this means no bread, pasta, rice, corn, cereals, potatoes, sugar, or alcohol, limited fruit and limited starchy vegetables (like sweet potatoes and beans). It means moderate protein and fat (e.g. meat, dairy, and nuts), and unlimited low-starch vegetables. He also emphasises the importance of using good fats (such as avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or butter from grass-fed cows) not bad fats (such as canola oil or soybean oil).

    Thats it.

    And thats what I like about the Keto Zone Diet.

    Its workable. I can cook and serve the whole family the same food. We just choose our proportions. I eat lots of vegetables, a little meat, and no pasta or potato.

    Its simple, its workable, and its sustainable.

    I wont go into the scienceyou can read the book for that. I recommend you do, because this diet does go against a lot of the mainstream dietary advice. If following a low-fat, high-carb diet works for you, then great. Go with it. But I feel constantly hungry on a low-fat diet. I lose weight, but gain it all back again (sound familiar?). I dont get so hungry on a low-carb diet, which has to be a good thing. If Im not hungry (and can withstand the temptation to eat when Im not hungry), then its going to be easier to lose weight.

    There are a handful of simple recipes at the end of The Keto Zone Diet book, with an emphasis on simple. They are all for one person (well, except for the mayo and seed bread, but both will keep).

    It doesnt matter that there arent many recipes.

    The internet is full of #Keto options, including cauliflower rice, cauliflower hash browns, and cauliflower pizza base, and a bread substitute or pancakes made from egg and cream cheese (the pancakes are a little sweeter than my regular recipe, but that means I dont need the maple syrup).

    If youre curious about the keto diet, then Dr. Colberts Keto Zone Diet is a good introduction. If youre a keto ninja, then this probably isnt the book for youalthough it might be a good book to own in paperback, to show your unbelieving friends that there is some real medical science behind your diet.
