Frappe with Philippians is part of the Coffee Cup Bible Studies, a series of Bible studies for women in compact, workbook format that examine the "life and times" of certain Bible characters and the books of the Bible that pertain to them. Each study is to be read over a four-to-six week period, and study sections are broken down into short, daily segments designed to fit reader's busy lifestyles.
Understanding that time is precious, the Coffee Cup Bible Studies are patterned in such a convenient way that they can be read during brief windows of opportunity that allow for meditation and study (breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, etc.) Scripture is provided from the NET Bible (New English Translation), making Bible study convenient for occasions when you can't carry a Bible.
It all started with a woman's prayer group. Its members could not have have imagined the legacy they would leave! The church at Philippi, founded on the prayers of these women, supported Paul, the "Apostle to the Gentiles", throughout his ministry and is recipient of his warmest letter. In this letter to his beloved spiritual family at Philippi-written with joy even as he sat imprisoned, abandoned, and facing possible execution-se see his desire to know Christ and make him known.
Likewise, he longs for his friends to share that vision. Frappe with Philippians takes readers on a journey back to first-century Philippi, bringing them face to face with the Son of God who "emptied Himself" and unites them as a community. In this study, present-day believers get a glimpse of the joy they can experience when the church is united with one focus: seeing humanity's need and making known God's solution in the person of Jesus Christ.
Sandra Glahn author of the Coffee Cup Bible Study Series, is editor in chief of Kindred Spirit, the magazine of Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), where she teaches journalism, creative writing, and the role of women in ministry. StephieB5 Stars Out Of 5Good StudyJuly 28, 2016StephieBQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In my opinion, this is a really good study. My group chose this book to study for the summer, partly because we thought it would take less time (daily) and focus than some other studies. It is more time consuming than any of us expected, but it seems that we all enjoy the depth of the study and background information that Sandra provides. Some days go pretty quickly (with mostly reading), however some days take me 45 minutes to an hour. (Maybe I am just slow.) We are currently in week three. So far, the beginning of the study was the most time consuming, because there was a lot of reading for background information. The background information has really helped me in my understanding of Philippians.
Erika5 Stars Out Of 5Really goodJanuary 21, 2016ErikaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have been using this with my Women's Group, and I found it very informative and balanced with both historical context and sound theological explainations. I learned a lot, and will hear Philippians in a new light when read in the future. Not all of the ladies in my group were able to keep up with the readings, (some found them too heavy), but despite that, we had some really good discussions using questions I pulled from the study. I plan to use others in this series for personal and group study.

You don't need to carry around the study and your Bible and notebook: it is all here in one convenient spiral-bound paperback. Very easy to use on a practical level and excellent as a study guide for both personal and group study. Ms. Glahn asks deep questions which provoke thought and discussion while providing the background so you can truly understand what St. Paul intended his readers to know. Great for novices to Bible study and for those with seminary degrees.

I even liked the suggested background movies and books to check out of the library. I actually took the book with me to the coffee shop each day and appreciated that the book included all daily bible verses. Paul and the Phillipians became real for me and the clear guidance helped me to understand Pauls use of words and references. I just ordered 2 more studies. Thanks for bringing the Word closer to my life.

I did appreciate the historical information, however. We were looking for a discussion guide where the Bible text would be primary - don't need all the little stories that distract from the Scripture. It almost seemed like more someone's grad project rather than a relational Bible discussion guide. It made me wonder if the author even used this study with real people or does she just like to do research and write?
