I'm guilty of it myself. You go to church and you sing those songs, but you don't really pay very close attention to the words that you are singing. It is an all-too-common scenario.

But with the songs that are out today (and this is just my opinion so take it as that), the depth of the lyrics only go so deep. Especially when you compare them to the old hymns and really look at the lyrics. There is very rich doctrine in those old classic hymns of so many years ago.

Classic Hymns is a book that is part of B&H Publishing's Read & Reflect With the Classics series. It takes 90 of the old hymns that often are lost today and combines them with Scripture and devotional material to make for a very rich personal devotion time.

Each chapter is devoted to a specific hymn (90 in total) and at the end, there are 3 or 4 Bible study questions, and 3 or 4 Personal Reflection questions followed by some guidance for prayer based on your studies and reflection time.

If you love the old hymns, or maybe have hardly ever heard them before, I would highly encourage you to get a copy of this book.It will either rekindle or give you a new love and appreciation for the old hymns, but more importantly, for the One who these hymns were written about.

B&H Publishing provided me a copy of this book in exchange for my open and honest review.

This book is the latest in the Read & Reflect with the Classics series. Each of the books in the series is a different a color but each has a classic fabric hardcover. Classic Hymns is a beautiful blue.I have been using Classic Hymnsduring my daily devotional time for months.Packed within 234 pages are 90 hymns. That alone is reason to love it but there is more. All the words toeach hymn are included along withthe name of who wrote each hymn and who wrote the music. After reading each hymn you will find three sections.

This review was written for Classic Hymns - eBook.
First, I would like to extend a heartfelt Thank you to Lifeway for sending me a copy of "Read and Reflect Classics: Classic Hymns" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

Ive heard that a hymnal can be an amazing devotional book. OK, I understand that many hymns lyrics come directly from Scripture, so this seems plausible. I love several hymns and get choked up whenever I hear or sing them. So when I found an inexpensive hymnal in a second-hand shop, I bought it. I still didnt engage the hymns the way I expected to. Then I had the opportunity to review Read and Reflect Classics: Classic Hymns. This wonderful book is a beautiful hardcover containing 90 songs!

At first, I admit I was disappointed that only the words were presented and not the music. Later, I appreciated the readability without the music taking up space. Each song is followed by Bible study questions that point to Scripture. There are Personal Reflection Questions that encourage personal application. And theyre not the same questions over and over. Each song ends with a suggestion for prayer. I really love how this book is leading me to other songs in other hymnals for study and devotional reading. This is an amazing book!
