cbcarter1 Stars Out Of 5okay but disappointing.March 20, 2015cbcarterQuality: 3Value: 2Meets Expectations: 2For those not familiar with the "emerging church", this book is a collection of short essays by participants in this movement. A few of the authors deal with some worrisome aspects of the movement, the others wholeheartedly endorse it, but all support it.. Several of the authors seem to be living in some dreamland, where facts and doctrinal truth are all but irrelevant to church practice. It's mostly about loving and serving and sacrifice. It's not that we aren't called to do those very things, but the basis of those acts is based in serving and Christ who is Truth. Embracing false ideas and teachings will not be offset by doing good things. It is obvious that a couple of the authors would have no problem endorsing sinful lifestyles such as homosexuality. They certainly don't seem to be concerned about encouraging their abandonment of such practices. I realize the church body at large has made mistakes and often gets bogged down in fringe issues but abandoning the clear teachings of scripture is not a fringe issue. This is reality, and there is absolute truth. If there isn't, as a few imply, then what's the point of it all. Just to feel better about ourselves? I look on much of what the emerging church is doing with disfavor, and this book did nothing to ameliorate that feeling. It will inform, you, however, of where they are coming from, but you must read discerningly. Behind the good intentions and flowery phrases lurks a definite danger. Read with caution and wisdom and prayer.
