    "I Will Build My Church...."

Of course, we would want to be far more conversant with the Bible, its stories, teachings and doctrines, and, supremely, with its Divine Author, than with the later history of the church. Having said that, it is also true that knowledge of Christian history is a very enlightening matter, and, if you agree with this, you will thoroughly enjoy the Timeline of Christian History just out from Rose Publishing. I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it, said our Lord, and it becomes evident that this has been exactly the case. Historical facts helps us realize how exponentially Christianity spread, yet how soon error entered in. It can help us realize, humbly, the price that many have paid, and are paying, for their loyalty to Christ and to His Word. I love this timeline -- I would suggest, though, that in future editions, Christianity's first century spread to India be included. I received free access to the timeline in return for a frank review.

I have seen a couple of timelines before, one showing Jewish history/significant persons and the other world history/significant persons, but I don't recall ever seeing a church history timeline. This is a basic church history timeline with markers telling of key events, Bible development, key persons and church councils. Included are some markers of certain heretical groups coming into being (like Catholicism, Jehovah's Witnessesetc.).

I didn't love the timeline overall, mainly because the arrangement is a bit confusing to me, it is arranged by chunks of centuries (AD 1500, 16001900..etc.) and the events are underneath each 'age' but the problem for me is that since the lists of events and people are descending at an angle some of them end up 'in' the section for the next era when they really aren't' in that era(though they do have a year next to each). Also, I would have preferred a format like Adam's World history chart one of the features which I really liked about it was that it had colored lines indicating about how long each person lived and showed if their lives overlapped each other (for instance, who of Adam's descendants were probably alive when Adam was still alive), the events of the times were underneath the timeline of the people and it just made it really neat and easier to understand for me. But I need to keep in mind that this is just a basic church history timeline, and it probably just isn't my 'style', others would probably have a fine time understanding it. Oh, and this church history timeline also colors the various markers/symbols to help differentiate between persons, events, councilsetc. So that's handy.

One of the other things I didn't particularly like about this is that it listed some things that didn't seem relevant to me, especially if one is doing a basic timeline, for instance in the late 1900s the timeline has a marker for when Pope John Paul II apologized for the Roman Catholic Church's lack of moral leadership during the Holocaust and there is also a marker for 'Mother' Teresa's death. I don't understand how those things are relevant to Church History (unless you think that Roman Catholicism is biblical).

Overall I just thought it could have been better, but some people may really like it.

Thanks you to the folks at Rose Publishing for sending me a free pdf review copy of this timeline to review! (My review did not have to be favorable)

I love the idea of reviewing the Universal Churchs history in a chronological order. At times it can be cumbersome when studying the Scriptures to understand which events are parallel to one another. A timeline is a valuable resource by showing how different event coincide.

The Basic Church History has a diagonal time line starting with The Life of Jesus and the Early Church and extends to this millennium. There is a ledger of symbols to identify Bible Development, Key People, Key Events, and Church Council. Due to the numerous events from 1 AD to our current millennium, I can understand the challenge in finding a suitable format that allows for highlighting significant historical people and events visibly.

One of the biggest problems that I experienced as I examined the timeline is the diagonal format. Some of the events overlap time periods which is evidently the reason for the diagonal format. The font is small; therefore, it requires some manipulation to zoom in on specific detail when viewing in a .PDF format. When printed the timeline can also be a bit difficult to view due to the small font size.

I am hoping that this timeline will be revised. This timeline can be a good resource if you are aware of the era that you are researching. I believe as a pamphlet this timeline do not really work effectively. It may be better to use a chronological Old/New Testaments Stages with the associate events and people in a vertical format. An index would be helpful in quickly identifying when key events and people within their respected timeframes. Additionally, identifying scriptural references when applicable would be a bonus and the font size needs to be increased.
