Product Description

Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics is, arguably, the most important theological publication of the 20th Century. Reacting against staunchly entrenched German Idealism, Barth sought to articulate a Christian theology that took seriously and yet overcame the critique of Christianity brought forth by 19th Century Protestant Liberalism. Most believe he succeeded to a great extent, and in doing so re-established an orthodox theology's ability to speak positively and confidently about faith, reason, and God in Jesus Christ.

Since its publication in the United States, the Dogmatics has remained relatively inaccessible to pastors, students, and even many professors due to its cost. That is now changing. Hendrickson Publishers, with its publication of the 14-volume set of the Church Dogmatics, has overcome this obstacle by providing an economic, hardback edition.

Hendrickson is reproducing the original 14-volume set edited by T.F. Torrance and G.W. Bromiley, first published more than forty years ago by T&T Clark. The new edition will contain the entire 14-volume set and all its contents as it was originally published by T&T Clark. Barth's extensive notes will also remain, most of which remain in their original languages. The set is now affordable, and accessible to all who wish to read Barth, engage him, and evaluate his theology in their own study.

It is an excellent opportunity for those who have had little exposure to Barth, or merely read about him, to become more familiar with him. As a theologian who increasingly influences Protestant's understanding of the Trinity, Christology, Creation, Ecclesiology, the Christian life, ethics, biblical interpretation, and the Christian's role in culture Barth has become required reading for all who take theology seriously.

As Calvin's Institutes was the most influential theological masterpiece of the Reformation, there is little doubt that Barth's Dogmatics is emerging as the most eminent attempt to articulate an orthodox theology in the modern period.

Publisher's Description

"The treatment is monumental and enormously stimulating. . . . The range of Barth’s reading in the field of theology is colossal, and his summaries of the history of many doctrines and controversies are of first-rate importance. . . . An outstanding achievement."
—London Quarterly and Holborn Review

One of the most important theological works ever written, Barth’s magnum opus is essential for serious students of Christian doctrine. Now this closely reasoned masterpiece of brilliant insight into the work and attributes of God, creation, Jesus, and the Christian life is available in a handsome hardcover set. The 14 volumes of this omnibus collection include:

I.1 Doctrine of the Word of God
I.2 Revelation of God

II.1 Knowledge of God
II.2 Election of God

III.1 Work of Creation
III.2 The Creature
III.3 Creator and Creature
III.4 The Command of God

IV.1 Doctrine of Reconciliation
IV.2 Jesus Christ, Servant and Lord
IV.3.1 Jesus Christ, the True Witness
IV.3.2 Jesus Christ, the True Witness
IV.4 The Christian Life

V. Index with Aids for the Preacher (Including short paragraph descriptions of each section; Scripture, name, and subject indices; and weekly sermon ideas with Scriptures for the church year)

Barth’s "canon of conviction" is evangelical because it is God-centered—stressing God’s encounter with man rather than man’s discovery of God; and its object, source, and norm is the transcendent God of the gospel. Church Dogmatics reveals Barth’s fully developed theology, and his writings continue to instruct and guide preachers, teachers, students, congregations, and laypeople worldwide today.

Of course Barth was a 20th century master. You can read all the other reviews to get that. But I question the majority view that this is a great binding. It's fine, but nothing special. Obviously glued, not sewn, so it probably won't stand up to heavy use.

I'm not upset about this; it's a nearly 10,000 pages of reading for under $200! Quite a bargain, but don't expect archival quality.

    Still, well worth your money.

Ask a Question

Q: Greek, Hebrew and Latin Translation Just how extensive is Barth's usage of Greek, Hebrew and Latin? My handle of the former two is fairly elementary (Latin is nil). Would it be better to opt for the study edition? Or does the price make the languages worth bearing with?

This, Hendrickson Edition, does not include the translations of Greek, Latin, and other languages found sporadically throughout the Dogmatics. The study edition would include these.
