This is a great book for people who think they know the Christmas story, and for those who know that they don't. It's both creative and historical, simple and insightful, fresh and faithful. It's a great book, and I hope it is widely read and used. - Kevin DeYoung, Pastor, University Reformed Church, East Lansing MI
An accessible, faithful guide to the actual Christmas story. Let this book help you get to grips with the reality and purpose of Christmas, and introduce you to the person who is at the center of it all. - Trevin Wax, Gospel Coalition blogger and Managing Editor of The Gospel Project.
A humorous, piercing and above all truthful book that challenges our preconceptions of Christmas. Carl writes with wit and a real grasp of modern minds to show us that Jesus can't stay in the manger. - Rico Tice, Assistant Minister, All Souls Langham Place, founder of Christianity Explored Ministries.
LBC 605 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful Witnessing ToolDecember 12, 2014LBC 60Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is an amazing little book that explains the birth of Christ in modern language that anyone can understand. It answers the most common questions and then guides the reader to examine their life. I hand these out to clerks, tellers, wait staff, etc. that I encounter during the Christmas season as a way to keep Christ in Christmas.
Highly recommend this short easy to read this book.
Jimmy ReaganWest Union, OHAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Great resource for families!November 23, 2012Jimmy ReaganWest Union, OHAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The subtitle of this book by Carl Laferton and published by The Good Book Company nicely explains what we are getting: "What really happened and why it matters_." It's a book for our families and might be used as well for those not familiar with Christianity.
The focusing on what really happened is helpful. He relates how our knowledge of the Christmas story comes more from Nativity Pageants than the Bible. I've always been amazed at the facts that are commonly wrong. Here the details are given, the misunderstandings addressed, and all given in a way anyone can comprehend.
He writes to hold attention with timely and helpful illustrations, again with younger folks in mind. For example, he brings the shepherds to life. He takes the highly romanticized view of them back to reality. He shows they are as looked down on as one of the lowest professions. You might think differently the next time you sing about shepherds watching their flocks by night!
The better part is why it is important. It's more than a good story. It's about a Savior. The manager is only important as it relates to a cross. The book ends answering questions younger folks, or even non-Christians, might ask. I pray this helps turn folks to Christ. It may because of the warm feelings Christmas stirs in many. This book is worth having and passing along.

Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Interesting, accurate, and well-writtenNovember 16, 2012Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Christmas Uncut" is a short, quick read about what really happened at the first Christmas. The tone was casual and sometimes humorous, but the author kept focused on his point. He accurately portrayed what the Bible says about Christ's birth and the purpose of his birth, life, and death.
Each chapter started with a short, funny story about a nativity play, and he used this to illustrate a point. The author then explained what really happened according to the Bible and filled in some cultural and historical background so the events can be understood better. He then explained why knowing the real story matters--how it changes our perspective of the events. He covered the angel telling Mary that she would become pregnant, the angels announcing Jesus' birth, the shepherds coming to see Jesus, the magi, how Herod reacted, what Simeon said, and why Jesus came in the first place.
While it's an interesting look at Christmas even for most Christians, the book seemed geared toward non-Christians familiar with nativity plays. Overall, I'd recommend this book, especially to those who don't know much about or haven't thought much about what the real Christmas would have been like.
I received this book as a review copy from the publishers.
