Nine unique stories from the 1800s offer a great historic read with various settings and situations and plucky women who overcome difficulties. From a city-bred schoolteacher who struggles against immense odds in a rugged, old cabin trying to maintain order during a snowstorm to a widowed storekeeper in Brownsville, Oregon (a historic town where I used to live), these novellas share insights into life during the 19th century. The realistic characters all endure struggles with their situations and relationships, and each encounters unexpected romance. Christmas plays a role but is not the major focus of most stories so this book makes a fine read any time of year. Living up to its title, each piece includes a log cabin too, with the final one being a peeled-pine-log church. I recommend this hearty collection.
