As the Civil War rages on, confederate sharpshooter Jake Winston has been sent to the Carnton plantation to recover from war injury, during which he receives orders to add and assist the Women Relief Society. Not his idea of doing his part for the war effort, but orders are orders. He then comes across a young widow, Aletta Prescott who is working at the plantation to keep her and her son housed and fed.
I loved Jake and Aletta, not only as a couple, but also as individual characters. Aletta was a strong woman who would sacrifice anything for her son. Jake is a man, coming to terms with who he was and who he needs to become due to the war. Together they help each other heal and learn to move forward with their lives.
As a rule I am not a fan of novella's, but I have been a big fan of Tamera Alexnder's for many years, so was not in the least hesitant about this book. It turned this was a great book and I was not in the least disappointed. It was a great story with well developed characters.
I would highly recommend this book. It was a great read, and not only for Christmas time.
I give this a solid 5 stars
Jolene5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent!December 28, 2019JoleneQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I finally found a novella I like! Christmas at Carnton by Tamera Alexander is the best novella I've read this year, maybe ever. I admit that I usually don't like the shortened form, so I don't read many novellas. However, this one was excellent. The story held my attention and offered a tender romance. Although it still had that shortened novella feel at a few points, the author created intriguing characters that developed deeply. Aletta was especially complex and wonderful. She had several issues to deal with as she grew and changed throughout the story. I feel like it's rare to see that much character development in a novella.
I recommend Christmas at Carnton by Tamera Alexander to readers looking for an inspirational Christmas read. It has a permanent place on my bookshelf and made me want to read more of Tamera Alexander's books. 5 stars!
