Christmas at Carnton is a tender story of a young pregnant woman with a young son, whose husband has recently died in the Civil War. Needing work, she applies for the temporary job as baker for the local Women's Relief Society auction at Carnton Plantation. There Arletta Prescott meets Captain Jake Winston who has been ordered to assist in any way needed. He has been one of the Confederate's best sharpshooters. Though his shoulder is healing where he was shot, the damage to his eyes has not. Once again, Tamera Alexander has created a hero who it's almost impossible to not fall at least a little bit in love with. Jake and Arletta's story is tender, though at times fraught with fear and sadness. It is easy to empathize with Arletta and to understand her confusion and hesitance at being attracted to Jake so soon after her husband's death. This is ultimately a story of hope-that God gives strength and direction to overcome difficulties and make something new from their love. Christmas at Carnton is a splendid beginning to Tamera Alexander's new series.

    Christmas at Carnton.

It's 1863 and confederate widow Aletta Prescott has just lost her job at the local clothing factory. With the foreclosure of her home looming and Christmas approaching, she wonders just how she is going to support herself and her son. Then when a chance encounter lands her a much needed job at Carnton Manor, Aletta learns much about Christmas miracles.

Confederate sharpshooter, Captain Jake Winston has been ordered to Carnton Manor. In addition to recovering from an war injury, he is also ordered to help the Women's Relief society put together a fundraiser in support of the confederate cause. Not wanting to spend anymore time with the women then what is required until he witness the relationship between Aletta and her son and he finds himself longing to spend time with them.

This book is a novella, so if your familiar with this author books this one is quite a bit small that what we are used to, I can understand that some readers might feel some of the story was a bit rushed. I personally didn't feel that way. I felt that the story flowed rather smoothly and that the whole story progressed rather well.

I really did like Jake and Aletta both as individuals and as a couple. We received quite a bit of their back stories so that was very helpful in the character development.

The author did a great job researching the Carnton Manor ( a real Manor) and the history of the civil war. It added so much to the story, made it so much more realistic.

Great book, not only for Christmas but for anytime of the year.

I enjoyed this novella more than I usually do because it feels like a complete story and seems a little longer and fuller than the usual novella. This is the beginning to a new series which, judging by the taste we got with this excellent novella, is going to be one not to miss.

Aletta Prescott is a pregnant war widow with a six year old son, and in 1863, unless you are very wealthy, this could be very big problem. Some of these women are unable to support themselves by aboveboard, wholesome means but Aletta will do everything possible to house and feed her son without sacrificing her morals. She happens apon a job at just the right moment ... sort of like a divine appointment.

Captain Jake Winston is assigned to help the Women's Relief Society prepare and put on an auction as a benefit to support the war effort. He doesn't want anything to do with it, and he doesn't approve of their methods but as he's injured and currently unable to fight he has no recourse but to do as his commander demands and hope he recovers quickly. His injury is one that is not immediately obvious upon meeting him as a missing limb would be and that sometimes could be mistaken for shirking his duty.

Truthfully, two things annoyed me in this story. I wasn't sure why he wouldn't tell Aletta or anyone else earlier on what his injury was, and I don't want to give anything away but her secondary job at the estate while pregnant, ya right. Otherwise I loved it.

I received this ebook from Thomas Nelson and my opinion is my own.
