The Way of a Christian: Life Lessons from Pilgrim's Progress-a 90-Day Devotional is an intriguing devotional.

Using John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, which was published in 1678 after he spent twelve years in prison for refusing to give up his spiritual mission, each devotion pulls a quote from Part I of Bunyan's book, discusses how it relates to a Christian's life today, explains what's going on at this point in The Pilgrim's Progress, reinforces the devotion with scripture references, offers several questions for reflection, and ends with a prayer.

The introduction to this devotional book states its purpose is to show the transcendent and eternal truths contained in Bunyan's story. I believe it achieves exactly that.

The reader is encouraged to read The Pilgrim's Progress along with the devotional. Although it is not necessary to read the book along with the devotional, it is interesting to do so.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House for a fair and honest review, which is exactly what I gave.

The Way of a Pilgrim: Life Lessons from Pilgrim's Progress is a medium-sized hardcover with a blue ribbon bookmark. The introduction says you can pair the devotional with Part 1 of The Pilgrim's Progress, and that it will "provide insight and faith to defeat the enemy, empower you to live a more victorious Christian life and bring you encouragement and joy on your pilgrim journey".

Each day is two pages long and has a reflection about The Pilgrim's Progress, a bible passage, some questions, and a prayer.

This devotional is really nice and edifying. It feels more like a study guide for the book than a devotional, which is something I do enjoy and I think many people will enjoy and benefit from.

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This lovely 90-day devotional, complete with full-color pages, is filled with lessons straight from the Christian classic Pilgrim's Progress. Each short devotional is a two-page spread. It'll mean more to you if you're familiar with the story but there's still plenty to be gleaned even if you aren't.

The Pilgrim's Progress is a classic theological fiction novel and I absolutely loved it. We just recently finished reading The Little Pilgrim's Progress, which is a re-write of the original meant specifically for children. Once again, this version was phenomenal as well. So I had high expectations for this devotional along with a bit of skepticism.

The skepticism comes directly from the fact that the devotional is published through Baker Publishing Group's Chosen division. They are known for very specific charismatic writings, ones I often do not align with. The other questionable piece of the devotional is no blatant acknowledgment of who the author(s) is/are. I did find within the first page of fine print the following statement: Written by David P. French. The author should always be clearly stated as this is a very important part of any written text. The person's history of writing, theology, doctrine, etc. will have a huge impact on the text and how the reader interprets the text.

In regards to the structure of the devotional, there are ninety days, each of which include an initial quote directly from The Pilgrim's Progress, the daily insights, scripture reference, applicable questions, and prayer. Each day is simple, quick, and easy.

I did not enjoy the fact that there was not consistency in the version of Scripture used throughout the devotional. Some days utilized NASB while others used NIV and even more versions. This is often the strategy used to get a certain point across rather than the true meaning of scripture.

Although I enjoyed many of the daily devotionals, there were too many negative factors for me to be able to recommend it. I am disappointed that a devotional based off such an amazing and classic novel failed to do it justice.

I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review.
