Horrified by the poverty and suffering most people took for granted in industrial England, William Booth dedicated his life to bringing the gospel to the outcasts of society who would never enter a church and weren't welcome there. At age fifteen William vowed, "God shall have all there is of William Booth," and not even resistance from the church and government, lack of financial support, or vicious attacks by angry mobs could stop him from spreading the light of the gospel through the streets of England. Today, all around the world, General William Booth's Salvation Army operates thousands of evangelistic and social service centers, changing countless lives with the love of God and the courage of their convictions.
For ages 10 and up.

There are hidden treasures in these books about our Christian ancestors. They tell tales that build our faith by revealing God at work in the lives of people who placed their trust in him! They are testimonies to how God will work through both ordinary and extraordinary people alike. They celebrate the type of courageous, dedicated, and godly heroes we want our children to admire.
Little pieces of the stories bring back the fondest memories of our homeschool days. I found these books personally faith-building, and I know they have helped shape my children's faith as well. Approx. 200 pages each, softcovers from YWAM.

After quitting school at age 13 to help support the family William went to work in a pawn shop and then at age 17 began his preaching career. The following account describes one of history's greatest evangelical figures. This book does a fantastic job of showing the early history of the Salvation Army and goes in depth in its portrayal of William's life. I literally had trouble putting the book down, it was so captivating. However, I found that the last chapter was slightly confusing and could probably have been left out of the book, although it did make for an interesting ending, albeit a befuddling one. As well, some of the descriptions of people in need or in trouble were disturbing and therefore I would recommend this book for Grades 7 and up. I would give it 4 out of 5.
