Product Description

President of the Missouri Synod from 1899 to 1911, Pieper was an ardent opponent of what he felt were the corrosive effects of liberalism spreading in German Lutheran circles of his day. This is his ardent defense of traditional Reformation doctrines, interacting with hundreds of his predecessors. 2122 pages total, four hardcovers. Concordia.

I highly recommend these volumes to all Christians who desire to stand firm in the freedom wherewith Christ hath set us free. Pieper's lucid explanations of the teachings of God's Word on all subjects from the Church to the Sacraments to the Gospel of the free forgiveness of sins for Christ's sake put the whole counsel of God before you. Particularly edifying are his discussions in the prolegomena, found in Vol. 1, of the distinction between Christianity as the religion of the Gospel of God's salvation for man in Christ and all other religions as religions of the Law in which man must earn God's favor and his staunch defense of the Bible as God's own Word, over against all ancient and modern heresies. The index included in this English edition as volume 4 is a great idea, and the binding will last forever (my 1917-24 German edition from Concordia is still in beautiful shape).

I am very happy with this purchase. From reading the content of this set, Pieper could have written this yesterday. It is incredibly applicable to current situations, regardless of when it was first published. The format is similar to other systematic theologies and very methodical. I found Pieper's writing style to be easy to understand, and I am a lay person. He does frequently use greek and latin quotes, but his intent is readily determined from context or direct explanation. He also quotes many theologians, some of whom are meaningless to me, but Pieper makes his point clear regardless.I would highly recommend this set to anyone seeking to understand pure Christianity. These books would also be very beneficial for someone seeking to understand the differences between true Lutherans and everyone else. Pieper also makes excellent, well reasoned arguements to support the historic faith and addresses many prominent objections on a miriad of different issues. These books are worth reading for anyone who claims the name of Christian, not just Lutheran. The books themselves are well printed, with a stout binding and high quality paper. The books open easily and comfortably. The index is excellent and very detailed. They are also very attractive looking books worthy of display, but you really ought to read them before you make decorations out of them!

A knowledge of Christian doctrine should be an intrest of any maturing follower of Christ. Peiper's "Christian Dogmatics" is an excellent treatise on systematic theology from a very well thought out conservative reformed viewpoint. Seminary level in it's depth, yet accessible for the serious lay person. Written by one of the great theologians/dogmaticians of the last few hundred years. Maintains all the core concepts of the Protestant Reformation, that our salvation is granted through grace alone, by faith alone, in Christ alone, as revealed in holy scripture alone, for the glory of God alone (sola gratia, sola fide, solus Christus, sola scriptura, soli Deo gloria). Rightly thrashes modern mush-minded liberal theology which relies on the theologians ego rather than scripture to determine theological dogmatics. All Christian doctrine must be based only on the divine Word of God, the Bible. All Greek references are to the Majority Text (Textus Receptus), avoiding new age translations. (Knowledge of Greek is not necessary to gain 99.5% of what these volumes have to offer). For those wishing to learn the same content with less reading and study, John Theodore Mueller wrote a book by the same name, "Christian Dogmatics", (1 volume) which is dedicated to Peiper and is an epitome of his work. An even easier read is "A Summary of Christian Doctrine" by Edward W. A. Keohler. Both Mueller and Koehler are, like Pieper, published through Concordia Publishing House ( The Triglot Concordia, another must read, can also be purchased there.
