Publisher's Description

WHAT’S THE KEY TO HAVING MORE PASSION FOR CHRIST, THE CROSS, AND THE GOSPEL ?

The answer is to look at the death of Christ not from our point of view, but from God’s. That’s what this book helps you do in a profound, strategic, and life-changing way.

Author C. J. Mahaney exposes our human tendency to look at the Savior’s death (and at everything else!) through our own subjective feelings and impressions, rather than from the standpoint of objective truth. By nature we always begin with ourselves rather than with God. But by following the God-first "Divine Order" in how we think—and by asking "What do I believe?" instead of "How do I feel?"—we’re freed up to embrace the right truth in the right way. The right feelings quickly follow, and they’re reliable because they’re anchored in truth.

The Secret to Sustaining Joy

Do you desire more passion for Christ? Then learn to see His death not from our point of view, but from God’s.

Author C. J. Mahaney puts you at our Savior’s side—and into His soul—during the most emotionally wrenching moments of His final hours. As you better understand the true nature of His struggle, you’ll grasp more than ever the staggering significance of why Jesus died…and fully experience His sacrifice as a personal act of love for you.

Allow the deepest truths of Calvary to stir your passion for Christ our mediator into a flame that burns your whole life long.

Story Behind the Book

There’s nothing more overpowering than to climb Calvary ’s hill in childlike attentiveness and wonder, with all our distractions and wrong assumptions cleared away. This book was written that we might be gripped by gratitude and enflamed in passion for the Savior, Christ our Mediator, who suffered the Father’s righteous wrath for us.

I don't typically review these kind of books. I generally steer away from straight theology books_ not because they are not beneficial or great encouragement but because I read them differently. And more slowly. And my current station in life does not lend itself to deep, uninterrupted theological study.

So why did I pick this one? Honestly, one of the reasons I chose it was because of the length. It's a short-and-sweet 74 pages. I've also heard great things about C.J. Mahaney, so I looked forward to being challenged in my understanding and comprehension of Christ as our Mediator.

    Challenged is an understatement.

Since picking up this book, I have been exceedingly more and more aware of how often I overlook the enormous importance of the sacrifice of Christ on my behalf. "Luther once said he felt as if Jesus Christ died only yesterday; through what we experience together in this book's pages, I hope you'll learn to live the same way." (Location 142, Kindle) Mahaney accomplishes just that_ at least, in my life it has had a major impact.

Too often we live based on feelings. Do we feel loved by God? Perhaps abandoned. Perhaps at the very least unheeded. But Mahaney encourages us that this isn't how it's supposed to be: "We tend to ask God for more ‘experience,' then assure Him that if He'll give it, we'll acknowledge and believe His truth." (Location 219)

There was one place near the end of the book that I was not in agreement with. Mahaney writes, "But in our own depths of suffering, the Father doesn't send an angel; He sends us the Savior. In our ordeals, we are given comfort and strength by Jesus Himself." (Location 852) Jesus Himself says in John 14:15-17 that He "will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever." We just discussed these verses in BFG (Bible Fellowship Group) on Sunday morning_ While Christ was on earth, He was very much a Comforter/Helper/Advocate. Yet He promised His disciples that the Father would send another Comforter/Helper/Advocate (depending on which translation you use)_ the Holy Spirit. Christ is now our Mediator, sitting at the right hand of the Father. The Holy Spirit has been commissioned to give us comfort and strength.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who feels they have lost a sense of exactly what Christ's sacrifice has meant for us. If you need a refreshing look at the gospel in all its horror and beauty, this is an excellent resource.
