Rev BevGeorgiaAge: 55-655 Stars Out Of 5Indepth Study of Paul & Women DisciplesFebruary 18, 2013Rev BevGeorgiaAge: 55-65Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dr. Payne's knowledge of ancient Greek and Hebrew as well as his conscientious attention to the socio-cultural situations in each of the churches to whom his letters are addressed make this book an exceptional resource. He reads Paul's letters in context and interprets Paul's attitude toward women in light of this context. Some of the more subtle and detailed analyses can be difficult to follow if you are not acquainted with these languages, at least from a lexical perspective, especially since Dr. Payne does not provide transliterations. On the other hand, the meat of his work is available to the reader without such background. Dr. Payne places Paul in context with the scriptures that Paul himself would have known and used in guiding the church through their struggles with defining who they were, how they worshipped and how they should live in the world but not of the world. He also includes very straightforward facts from the letters themselves, e.g., the many women and men Paul named in the letters, how their ministries are described, and how they are addressed, encouraged or corrected by Paul. If you are looking for a fresh and comprehensive perspective on Paul's words about women and the ministry of women that is grounded in scripture and the circumstances of the churches of the time, you will find this book a worthwhile read.
