Product Description

Rather than using an exhaustive verse-by-verse approach, Tony Merida and Francis Chan focus on the most essential parts of the apostle Paul's letter to the church of Philippi. Explaining key passages, they discuss church planting, prayer, joyfulness, community, a Christian worldview, witnessing, knowing Christ, shepherding the church, and more. An excellent tool for pastors, small-group leaders, or personal devotions.

Publisher's Description

Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ- centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible.

Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition.
Projected contributors to the series include notable authors such as Russell D. Moore, Al Mohler, Matt Chandler, Mark Dever, and others.

Editorial Reviews

It's one thing to know Bible stories; it's another to know the story of the Bible. It's one thing to be aware of the story's many heroes; it's another to have met the Hero himself. From the Old Testament that anticipates him, to the Gospels that manifest him, to the Book of Acts that proclaims him, to the Epistles that explain him, and to the Book of Revelation that tells of him coming again, your Bible is about Jesus. That's why I love the vision of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series. It models for preachers and teachers how to proclaim—with pastoral focus and exegetical care—the beauty of the gospel from every page of Scripture.

Matt Smethurst
Associate Editor for The Gospel Coalition

Few things are more important for faithful biblical interpretation than reading Scripture in light of its master narrative. The Christ-Centered Exposition series aims to do just that.  In a postmodern age, these commentaries provide pastors and lay people an invaluable resource that is unswervingly committed to the authority of Scripture and the centrality of the Gospel in the Bible’s storyline.

Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., President
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Simply put, I am highly impressed with this book. If the other books in this series (some are being written and others are in the planning stages) are even half as good, you will not be disappointed with this commentary series. The commentary in this book truly holds to the title where Christ is seen throughout the Scriptures. It provides excellent exposition that is not the same as typical commentaries where they provide commentary for every single verse. Rather, in this book, the authors approach a section of the Scriptures and provide in-depth commentary based on that particular topic that is very solid and insightful. This series is kind of geared toward pastors and small group leaders by design, however, I strongly feel that anyone can really get even more of an appreciation and understanding of the Word of God through this commentary series. At the end of each chapter in this book, the authors have a short section called "Reflect and Discuss" which contains ten very thought provoking questions and application points. These are excellent questions that really can be easily used in a small group-type study or even for individual reflection and application. Overall, I would say that this book and the series is highly recommended. I received a copy of this from B&H Publishing in exchange for my honest review

These commentaries are written to expound Biblical truth and provide questions that help people think or meditate on what they are studying. I found that the questions can be answered via journal, used in a small group setting or to elicit deeper examination of the text. I reviewed another commentary by these publishers that focused on 1 & 2 Kings that revealed to me Jesus in the Old Testament in a way I never say Him before!

Here in Philippians the authors go in smaller amounts of verses as the book of Philippians is only four chapters in length. Sometimes as I am reading the commentary after reading the Scripture portion in my Bible, I get antsy. As I pondered why, it became clear that in our instant society it really takes a decision to be still and know God. There isnt anything instant in our walk with the Lord; it takes a person who decides to have the self-control to study, read or meditate on Scripture when other people or life is knocking on his/her door.

It is my sincerest desire to know him deeper, point others to Him and above all glorify Him with my life. There is no short cut or formula in this relationship with God because it is a relationship not a nonliving activity to check off daily. I appreciate the authors insights, questions and encouragement to grow in my knowledge of Him which in turn helps grow my prayer life, loving others, and more. I want to continue to do so until I take my last breath here on earth and my first in heaven. How about you?
