Publisher's Description

You’ve heard it said, "All religions are equal." But do you know how to respond?

Tolerance sees all religions as spokes of one wheel, spinning everyone together in harmony with God. Christ Among Other gods shows how this wobbly wheel simply doesn’t hold up.

Walking you through a study of Christ—from his birth to his promised second coming—pastor and scholar Erwin W. Lutzer presents Jesus as He is: the only way of salvation. Learn how to:

  • Describe the uniqueness of Christ
  • Defend the claims of Christianity
  • Debunk the myths that many tout

The tensions between tolerance and truth are growing, as are the challenges of representing Christ in today’s world. Christ Among Other gods will help you understand and navigate these challenges. It gives you the facts you need to counter the claims of false religions with the truth of Christ. And what is more, it will help you fall more in love with Jesus, the only way, truth, and life.

"If you want to understand Christ better, defend Him with more confidence, and worship Him with more single-mindedness, this book is for you." — Josh McDowell, Josh McDowell Ministry

Editorial Reviews

"Christ Among Other gods: A Defense of Christ in an Age of Tolerance is a true must-read in my opinion. Lutzer argues throughout the book that Christianity is unique and that truth should never be compromised for the sake of tolerance.

Lutzer isn't attacking tolerance, that is ALL forms of tolerance. He differentiates between types of tolerance.

Legal tolerance, for example, would be 'the right for everyone to believe in whatever faith (or none at all) he wishes.' Social tolerance he defines as being, 'a commitment to respecting all men even if we vigorously disagree with their religion ideas.' Kindness, courtesy, respect--these are the ways tolerance can be shown. Lutzer applauds both legal and social tolerance. What he disapproves of--what he argues against in this book is uncritical tolerance, which he believes goes against all logic.

For example, all ideas are to be tolerated except the idea that there are absolutes, absolute truths, that truth can be known, that some ideas are true, and, other ideas are false--at least by default. Not all ideas, not all beliefs, can equally be true, Lutzer insists. If all the doctrines in all the world religions were equally true then you'd have a big, big, contradictory mess, absent of logic and common sense. Lutzer argues for the existence of truth, for the existence of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible, the Jesus who claimed to be the way, the truth, the life. Not one of many ways, not one of many truths, etc.

He writes:

'Officially, sin does not exist in our society, but if there were one sin left it would be a belief in objective truth, a belief that some things are still right or wrong; a belief that discrimination still has value if defined as being discriminating in what we believe, the way we behave, and what we defend.

The premise of this one is simple. Christ is not one of many gods. He cannot be shelved alongside other gods of the world. He is unique; Christianity is unique. It is a religion--a faith--based on historical fact, centered around Jesus Christ. The book studies his birth, his life (including miracles), his death, his resurrection, his ascension, his second coming. Lutzer argues that Christians should boldly stand for truth--no compromise--the world needs to know that Jesus is the way, the truth, the life. The world needs to know that heaven and hell are real, and, that each one of us will spend eternity somewhere. The Bible has authority; it speaks truth; every Christian should live their lives by God's revelation.'

Lutzer touches on other religions and other worldviews; he provides readers with a light overview of world religions and differing perspectives. It is not thorough or complete. His purpose is not to educate readers about other religions, other ideas; instead his purpose is to educate readers about Jesus. One can never assume--should never assume--that every person professing faith in Christ stands for truth and believes that the Bible is the very Word of God--true and authoritative.

'The Bible draws a definitive line through the peoples of the world, but it is not a line between races, nations, or even cultures, as such. This line separates Christ and his followers from all other religious choices. I'm committed to helping us identify that line, show where it should be drawn, and give reasons that we have no right to move it.'

The book is clear and straight forward. It is also engaging. Lutzer is NOT boring. He writes in a way that challenges readers to think, to consider, to act or react.

This book is for anyone looking for the answers to these questions:

Who is Jesus? Who was Jesus?

What do Christians believe?

Does it matter what you believe as long as you're sincere?

Is there such a thing as truth?

*Do our beliefs have consequences?"

    CHRIST AMONG OTHER GODS

A Defense of Christ in an Age of Tolerance

    By Erwin W. Lutzer

Ever heard someone say, All religions worship or have the same God? Well this book by Edwin Lutzer will give proof that all religions are not the same. He gives proof in the twelve chapters of this book that all religions are different, pointing out many details from each religion. He provides proof that the truth is in Christ. He was invited and attended a convention of the Parliament of the Worlds Religions, a group that is trying to make a one world religion possible, and some of the things discussed at that convention. He shares how some think we are to be tolerant of all religions and their beliefs.

Erwin has described the extraordinary birth, life, authority, death, resurrection, ascension and return of Christ. The facts that he offers are well explained and are Biblical based. The facts tell the true story of Jesus, the way to salvation and how the other religions do not even come close to the truth.

I would recommend this book for discussion groups, Bible studies and as a way of increasing your knowledge of what is going on in the world and why we need to be aware of the changes that some are trying to force on us.

Pastor Lutzer has written a very clear, readible book regarding current cultural values vs Biblical Christianity. It is especially helpful to those of us from a former era who find current American cultural attitudes 'a different country' from what we knew. Readers will gain insight into mainstream arguments against Christianity frequently encountered and wisdom in how to respond from sound Biblical footing.

I was elated to read this book, I eagerly waited for it to arrive in the mail. Not many books exist in the defense of Jesus Christ as our only Savior.

Pastor Lutzer has written this book with easy to understand vocabulary. There's so many new terms/phrases that have developed with time which are prominent in this age of tolerance such as; pluralism, inclusivism, exclusivism, selectivism, social tolerance, legal tolerance, uncritical tolerance, among others that I had heard before but didn't exactly know their meanings. I found the first 3 chapters very informative and helpful in understanding apologetics vernacular (which I, most often than not, feel lost with). Each chapter focuses on an account for the defense of Jesus as the only Savior with Biblical evidence, comparison of other deities/ religions, logic, and philosophy. Pastor Lutzer also includes anecdotes and personal experiences which make the reading more engaging. The arguments made are clear and logical in response to any skeptic of the faith. I primarily picked this book because I wanted to expand my apologetics skills and was not wholly disappointed. I have had many conversations with skeptics and always struggled with defending my faith for lack of "logical" reasoning (1 Peter 3:15) but have found the definitions and arguments very helpful. I agree with and marked down this quote, "You are entitled to your own private opinion, but you are not entitled to your own private truth!" Needless to say, I underlined, marked and highlighted this book like crazy. Reading this book and studying the Scriptures together, has helped me made sense of some of the arguments that plague skeptics and how to answer them without straying from Biblical truth. I love that the Bible, can in fact, be used against those who don't believe in it and debunks the all too worn out argument I hear a lot, "You cannot use the Bible to defend itself against those who don't believe in it." All in all, this book sets down to do what it said it would do: "describe the uniqueness of Christ, defend the claims of Christianity, and debunk the myths that many tout." I would recommend this book to those who have doubts about Christ but are willing to investigate and for Christians looking to learn how to defend their faith.

I received a free copy from Moody Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.

This book helped me so much to be able give an

answer for the hope that lies within me. I was challenged to

show the existence of God without using the Bible. From

the time we are born our hearts are an idol factory. None of us are born belonging to God. So, God must intervene and draw.

The God of ALL creation is the true God. This book will help

you to understand that Jesus Christ is the Creator. True

Christians have been bought with a price and that price was

the perfect, spotless, holy Blood of God Almighty! THIS is

God's plan and there is no plan B !!!

Erwin Lutzers book titled Christ Among Many gods is similar to Ravi Zacharias book titled Jesus Among Other Gods. Both are attacks on religious relativeness. Mypreference is Lutzers work. Ravi Zacharias starts his book talking his lifes journey before accepting Jesus as His own Savior. His approach is less analytical and more anecdotal. Lutzer does use his own fairly recent encounters with those who believe in religious relativeness and his response to those who hold this contrary view. Lutzers work is more cholarly.
How does one want to perceive Jesus: mere man or God? To believe scripture or to cast Him differently? Does one want to incorporate Jesus into other belief systems? Those who preach relativeness seek to portray Jesus as mere man or to portray him as one of many gods. Scripture depicts a different Jesus. Jesus is the Christ because He is God who became man while staying God. Not a god but the only God; Lutzer argues that Jesus Christ cannot be ncorporated into another belief system.
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. (1 John 2:22 RSV)
