Excellent book! Great laughs! Awesome recipes and snack ideas! Great lessons! This book has it all.

I really enjoyed reading my way through The Chocolate Diaries. Each chapter contains uplifting stories from the author's own life and "Sweet Secrets", words of advice from other women. At the end of the chapter, Author Karen Scalf Linamen includes a "Food For Thought" which cause the reader to reflect on her own life in relation to the chapter she has just finished reading.

But my favorite part, honestly, is the "Because Real Women don't need a Cookbook". In each of these random sections the author has a different sweet treat you can make at home, all containing chocolate.

I would recommend this book to all women out there.

I enjoyed the stories in this book.....and the recipes!! Can see myself having a bowl of coconut..shredded...chocolate syrup and a few almonds! A Mounds?? Who cares...it takes care of that craving!

There is a lot of healing in laughter! Add in tears and of course the main ingredient...Prayer! What great messages! Karen is a girl after my own heart with Chocolate!! YUM!

There are some good chuckles...loved in Chapter 10 how her boyfriend asked her "who are you?" Great descriptions. You even find out about Aunt Cora...KFC indeed!

Each chapter has Sweet Secrets and Food for thought! Throughout all lean on God!

I recommend this enlightening book and delightful book filled real stories!

I will admit that initially, I was thinking perhaps "The Chocolate Diaries" would be only slightly original and a lot like the stack of devotional-type books I'd read; a bit trite or something, or too superficial. Yet, I really wanted to give it a try. Being visually drawn to lovely and eclectic book covers, I found the cover of this book particularly cute and whimsical and it made me want to read what was inside all the more. SO glad I did!

This book is very down-to-earth and not theologically deep in that you don't have to try to wade your way through it. The format, to me, is much like a good girlfriend, sharing her stories -- humorous and touching both -- with you over a cup of coffee and (of COURSE!) a piece of good chocolate or two! There were times in this book I found myself giggling. But there were also many, many points, stories, suggestions, and lists that touched me at the heart and either helped convict me or encourage me or both! This was an enjoyable and helpful, REAL read from a truly genuine woman. I loved reading it alone, and am quite sure it would make a fun, lighthearted and yet profound shared read for a Bible Study or such!

Try it for yourself -- and don't forget some chocolate!!

*Please note I was provided a free copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing in order to write a review. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

This book was a great fun read. I enjoyed it so much! It was uplifting with out being preachy, you laughed and will not want to put this book down till your done. I loved how she talked about things that happen in everyday life. Each chapter is short and sweet, each chapter has a question and answer section. To make this great book even better each chapter they talk about Chocolate!!! If you are looking for a fun, uplifting, non preachy book to make your life even sweeter look into The Chocolate Diaries but be fore warned your going to need to have some chocolate on hand! :)

thank you blogging for books @ Waterbrook Mulnomah for sending me this review copy.

I chose The Chocolate Diaries from Waterbrook Press to review because...well...it should be quite obvious -- chocolate is in it's title. The book did not disappoint my obvious craving for the sweet treat. In fact, as I write this review, I'm taste-testing a recipe my vbgf gave me for a Nutella Slimfast Espresso Frappe. Yumm... Needless to say - I'm on a caffeinated, chocolate high.

Anyway, this book is written by Karen Scalf Linamen and she shares "Secrets for a Sweeter Journey on the Rocky Road of Life." Everyone can certainly relate to this.

Each chapter is fairly short and towards the middle has a section for a question/answer from someone she has asked that follows along with what the chapter is about. At the end of each chapter, the author has a - Food for Thought, where she asks questions directed to the reader. The very best part of each chapter is her chocolate recipes she's received from readers. I can't wait to try some of them!

One quote in the book that stands out in my mind is this, "To live an extraordinary life, you have to let someone else do the ordinary." (pg. 99) Many times we, as mothers, wives, friends... become the support staff so others can follow their dreams. There comes a time when it's OUR turn to spread our wings and fly and others can support us in our endeavors. True, yes?

If you are looking for a really involved Bible Beth Moore-like study, then this isn't the book for you. If you are looking for something fun and quick, maybe to do together with a friend, then this is perfect! Karen shares her life story with us and it isn't wrapped up in a pretty bow, so if you like perfect Christian lives show-cased in books - then again, this book is NOT for you. If you do like real Christians who aren't afraid to show themselves and their real crazy lives, then just maybe you will enjoy this book.

There now. I am going to finish my caffeinated, chocolate goodness. I will see you at Christianbook.com in the checkout line!
