Jamie C. Martin lives a global life at home every day with four countries (England, India, Liberia, and the USA) represented under her roof. She's blessed to be called Mommy by her biological son and her two internationally adopted children and loves sipping cups of tea with her British husband. Jamie blogs at www.simplehomeschool.net, where she's been writing since 2009 about mindful parenting, global mindset, education, and the joy found in a pile of books. She and her husband live with their three children in Connecticut.
I know Im not the only one whos stood in the middle of the childrens section at the library or bookstore knowing Im surrounded by good books to read but wishing someone would point me toward which ones to choose---and which to pass over. Now Jamie is here to help me do just that. Shes done the hard work of sorting the good stuff from the mediocre, highlighting her familys favorite titles region by region. Now Im free to focus on the fun part: reading good books with my kids.
Ive traveled all over the globe and have seen both amazingly beautiful and horrifically tragic parts of our planet. I want my children to impact and alleviate the worlds hurts one day, but first they have to fall in love with it. Thats where a resource like Jamies book comes in. It enables our families to read our way to a love for the world, thereby giving fuel to our determination to heal it in the unique way God created us to.
Give Your Child the World is a must-read for every parent who wants to expand their childs worldview beyond the suburban bubble of middle-class American culture. Cant afford to travel? Jamie proves that giving your children cross-cultural experiences need not cost a dime. A library card and a strong imagination can make it happen!
Give Your Child the World is an absolutely brilliant book. I love how Jamie has taken carefully selected literature from all over and about the world, broken it into topics, countries, and age ranges, and created an incredible resource where I can simply open the pages and choose. Its also filled with practical ideas and inspiration to help me teach my children about the beauty and diversity of the world. Shes done the work! I cant wait to get started traveling the world!

The world is smaller than ever and only getting smaller. As parents, we would do well to raise our children so they are able to navigate the increasingly global society they will live in. Jamie has given us parents an incredible gift. With practical ideas and a wonderful reading list, Give Your Child the World is a valuable resource in raising compassionate, global-minded kids who love the whole world.
As parents, we have a deep desire to raise our kids with cultural sensitivity and aware- ness. So much so that weve made traveling around the world as a family a priority, to give our kids rich cultural experiences that we hope will shape them into adults who make a difference. I only wish Id had Jamies amazing book before we started traveling, to help me find books for our kids to read in preparation for the places we visited. But even better, I think its the perfect tool for those who arent able to travel. Stories are one of the best ways to develop empathy, compassion, and gain someone elses perspective, and these book recommendations will give your kids the incomparable gift of being able to travel the world through story.

Its fascinating to look back and see Gods hand so obviously active in Martins early life, reminding me that the same is true in each of our lives.
Part One continues with one of my favorite chapters, Practical Ways to Invite the World into Your Home. The author fills this chapter with a myriad of simple ideas that make a big difference in developing global mindedness in our families.I wish I had possessed this book 15 years ago when my children were young!
To help you make reading a natural part of your familys life, the first part of Give Your Child the World concludes with suggestions for developing a story-solid foundation.
The rest of this wonderful resource consists of lists, summaries, and personal notations of hundreds of books that will bring the world to your family. These book lists are divided into age groups (4-6, 6-8, 8-10, and 10-12) within chapters representing different continents or areas of the world, with one general multicultural chapter. I do wish the author would have included suggestions for books for older teens and adults.
One of the most useful aspects of this book are the extensive indexes, with books listed by title, historical time period, country/region, and author. With the ability to cross-reference by time and region, youll always find the perfect book for your circumstances.
With this guide, you will have at your fingertips an invaluable resource to connect ourselves and the next generation with our global family.
Jamie C. Martin believes in the power of story to develop our childrens awareness, empathy, and compassion for others around the globe. In her words, What we have in common with our worldwide neighbors far outweighs what separates us.
Give Your Child the World: Raising Globally Minded Kids One Book at a Time is a book I wish I would have had years ago. But global-mindedness is a timely concept to weave into our lives at any age; therefore, I expect I will be referencing this resource for years to come.
