Publisher's Description

Is an impostor robbing you of God’s love?
We’ve bought into the lie that we are worthy of God’s love only when our lives are going well. If our families are happy or our jobs are meaningful, life is a success. But when life begins to fall through the cracks and embarrassing sins threaten to reveal our less-than-perfect identity, we scramble to keep up a good front to present to the world—and to God. We hide until we can rearrange the mask of perfection. Sadly, it is then that we wonder why we lack intimate relationships and a passionate faith.

All this time God is calling us to take the mask off and come openly to Him. He longs for us to know in the depth of our beings that He loves us and accepts us as we are. When we are our true selves, we can finally claim our identity as God’s child—Abba’s child—and experience His pure pleasure in who we are. Brennan Manning encourages us to let go of the impostor lifestyle and freely accept our belovedness as a child of the heavenly Father. In Him there is life.

Great book, Brennan has a way of bringing the Love of Christ to life through his words and works. Must read for anyone who has ever doubted The Love of God based on their own merit, works and sins.

I have read a few other books by Brennan Manning and since they were pretty good, I figured I couldnt go wrong with this one.

Essentially the core of the book revolves around the sin problem that born-again believers are faced with. He references Pauls battle: the things I wish to do, I do not. He claims that our greatest struggle is accepting that we are truly and unconditionally loved by God despite the past, present or future. He emphasizes that our obedience and desire to become like Him should be planted in the simple fact that He loves us.

He also spends a good deal of time describing the name Abba for God, its purpose, and our need to embrace it. He uses the name Abba or Daddy throughout the book and can be quite awkward or uncomfortable if not used to such an intimate and informal relationship with the Father.

He does a great job of establishing that the book is not for intellectual use but rather for application. He utilizes several scriptures to support and follow up with his statements as well as wisdom quotes from other biblical scholars.

My favorite portion was where he explained his complicated, difficult life a struggle with alcoholism, time with the Franciscan order, fame, and marriage. This allows the rest of the book to have a level of realism.

Its a very short, roughly 150 pages, practical, and simple book. But despite it being an easy read, it has some significantly powerful truth that could impact those seeking a relationship with the Lord.

Originally published in 1994, this new edition reminded me why I read it years ago. Its as relevant today, maybe even more so, as it was then. This updated version has a new cover, forward, preface and best of all a section for group study that is different from the usual Q&A format Ive seen elsewhere. Internalizing the text is the goal. Here the idea is geared more toward application of the text than a review. A little tougher for some, but so worth the effort. Id recommend the book for this additional chapter by itself.

The main text comes from experience and maturity, in my opinion. I found more depth here than in some other books Ive read lately and to be honest that is what Im looking for these days. Manning encourages his reader all along the way through the book. A look at the imposter, the Pharisee, the beloved, the child all lead toward the love of God for His children. The love that allows the use of a term like Abba freely and openly.

For those who have not read this book, please do. For those that read it years ago, pick it up and look again. I recommend this book and really like the group guide found in this issue. I am glad that the opportunity to revisit this work from Manning opened for me. Dont miss this one.

I received this book from the publisher in return for a review.
