Tell us a little about yourself. While teaching young children for 31 years, I collected a journal of funny things that my primary-aged students have said to me. Their stories revealed their take on Bible stories to math, science and reading. I graduated with a degree in Christian Education from Emmanuel College and a Master's in Education from Gardner Webb University.
What was your motivation behind this project? These stories were a collection of funny sayings that my students have said to me during my years of teaching. After retiring from teaching, i decided to sort and compose the stories into different categories that showed how young children view the world. Kids tell it like it is.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My goal is to provide humor and inspiration from our young scholars.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? While my husband was undergoing chemo treatment, the publication of this book became my therapy. The humor helped my husband handle his treatments with humor. As the Word says, Laughter does good like medicine.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? When I began my teaching career back in the 1980's, I often told my mother about some of the funny sayings from my students. "Write those sayings down in a journal. Maybe some day, you could publish a book," advised my mother.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: These sayings give us adults an innocent reminder of childhood. Young children are concrete learners, but have their own solutions to abstract reasoning problems. Their honest answers to classroom questions are priceless and oh so funny.
