Gisèle Duchant guards a secret that could cost her life. Tunnels snake through the hill under her family’s medieval chateau in Normandy. Now, with Hitler’s army bearing down, her brother and several friends are hiding in the tunnels, resisting the German occupation of France.
But when German soldiers take over the family’s château, Gisèle is forced to host them as well—while harboring the resistance fighters right below their feet. Taking in a Jewish friend’s baby, she convinces the Nazis that it is her child, ultimately risking everything for the future of the child. When the German officers begin to suspect her deception, an unlikely hero rescues both her and the child.
A present day story weaves through the past one as Chloe Sauver, Gisèle’s granddaughter, arrives in Normandy. After calling off her engagement with a political candidate, Chloe pays a visit to the chateau to escape publicity and work with a documentary filmmaker, Riley, who has uncovered a fascinating story about Jews serving in Hitler’s army. Riley wants to research Chloe’s family history and the lives that were saved in the tunnels under their house in Normandy. Chloe is floored—her family isn’t Jewish, for one thing, and she doesn’t know anything about tunnels or the history of the house. But as she begins to explore the dark and winding passageways beneath the chateau, nothing can prepare her for the shock of what she and Riley discover…
With emotion and intrigue, Melanie Dobson brings World War II France to life in this beautiful novel about war, family, sacrifice, and the secrets of the past.
“Intriguing and suspenseful, rich in secrets, hidden tunnels and heroic deeds—Melanie Dobson’s Chateau of Secrets weaves a compelling tale of a family’s sacrifice for those in need, and their determination to resist Nazi domination in the France they remember and love. A compelling and beautiful story not to be missed.”
“Seldom do I read an entire book in one day, but I did with Château of Secrets. I was entranced by the beautifully researched setting and the complex web of characters. Melanie Dobson has written a masterful novel!”
“Chateau of Secrets is the heart-wrenching tale of two women who must uncover the truth of their past in order to find peace and—in one case—true love in their future. The secrets the characters have kept and the lies they have told drive a story that is filled with suspense and romance.”

Melanie Dobson did a fantastic piece of work here in writing of the past and a war we never personally had to endure. It's difficult for us to understand the hardships and sufferings one goes through in a war. Melanie painted a clear picture in my mind. At times I felt like I was one of the victims and felt their fear and stress. I think the person who gave only one star just hated the war and I agree it was terrible. The only way the human race will ever know peace is when the Prince of Peace (Yeshua--Jesus) returns to earth. I can't wait for His Return.
MauriKansasAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Chateau full of secretsMarch 31, 2015MauriKansasAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Chateau of Secrets tells two stories at once. Each chapter alternates between a contemporary story and the historical. This has the potential for being confusing, but the contemporary is told in first person, so that helps keep the story lines distinct. I've read many novels set during World War II but don't remember any others dealing with Jews who had served in the German army. This made a very interesting twist to the story. This is the first book I've read by Melanie Dobson, but I don't think it will be the last. I highly recommend Chateau of Secrets.
Jennifer Corn4 Stars Out Of 5Excellent ReadDecember 16, 2014Jennifer CornGreat story! I read it all the way through in one night. I would like to add a cautionary note that one of the scenes might be considered PG-13 due to the attack of a soldier towards the main heroine. However, I am puzzled by the reviewer that gave this book one star. There is not any bad language in this book.
