Amy5 Stars Out Of 5Heartbreakingly BeautifulSeptember 1, 2021AmyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This review was written for Chasing Shadows. When you hear stories about WWII, they're almost always set in England, France, Germany, Italy, the US, or the South Pacific. Rarely do you hear about the war in Holland (in fact, I would guess that many assume that the war didn't really touch them and that they were actually allowed to remain neutral as planned). In this book, Lynn Austin has given a beautiful, and many times heartbreaking, look at WWII-era Holland and the horrors they endured. But she also gives a beautiful look at how hard the Dutch people fought back and refused to give into the abuse and propoganda. Even though the Nazi's occupied Holland for several years, they never TRULY beat the Dutch people or ever completely broke their spirits, no matter how hard they tried.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Some parts are difficult to read, but so very worth it.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own. -

It alternates between the point of view of several people, of different ages and religions, in Holland during World War II. And it made me understand a little better why a regime could have some people do such monstrous things, while others became unsung heroes. I highly recommend it!

The strength of the women in the story was possible because of their faith. When faced with almost unimaginable hardship, they relied on scripture and other words of faith to be able to endure. Chasing Shadows told of how the Dutch resisted the Nazis during their occupation of the Netherlands. Lena, her daughter Ans, Miriam, and Eloise and the other family members will not be easily forgotten. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy reading historical fiction. I received a complementary copy of the novel. All thoughts are my own.
