Publisher's Description

Run TO the Roar!

When the image of a man-eating beast travels through the optic nerve and into the visual cortex, the brain sends the body a simple but urgent message: run away! That’s what normal people do, but not lion chasers. Rather than seeing a five hundred pound problem, they see an opportunity for God to show up and show His power..

Chase the Lion is more than a catch phrase; it’s a radically different approach to life. It’s only when we stop fearing failure that we can fully seize opportunity by the mane. With grit and gusto, New York Times bestselling author Mark Batterson delivers a bold message to everyone with a big dream.

Quit playing it safe and start running towards the roar!

This is a wake-up call to stop living as if the purpose was to simply arrive safely at death. Our dreams should scare us. They should be so big that without God they are impossible to achieve. Quit running away from what you’re afraid of.

Chase the lion!
Change the world!

What is Your Five Hundred Pound Dream?

In this highly anticipated sequel to his best-selling In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Mark Batterson invites lion chasers everywhere to chase dreams so impossible that victory demands we face our fears, defy the odds, and hold tight to God.

These are the kind of dreams that will make you a bigger person and the world a better place.

Based upon II Samuel 23, Chase the Lion tells the true story of an ancient warrior named Benaiah who chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day—and then killed it. For most people, that situation wouldn’t just be a problem…it would be the last problem they ever faced. For Benaiah, it was an opportunity to step into his destiny. After defeating the lion, he landed his dream job as King David’s bodyguard and eventually became Commander-in-Chief of Israel’s army under King Solomon.

Written in a way that both challenges and encourages, this revolutionary book will help unleash the faith and courage you need to identify, chase, and catch the five hundred pound dreams in your life.

—Louie Giglio, pastor of Passion City Church, founder of Passion Conferences, and author of The Comeback

"Mark Batterson reminds us to trust in the powerful truth that with God we don’t have to let our thinking be limited. By obeying Him, we let our growing faith push us to dream big and lean in ever closer to Him without fear or hesitation. It’s time to trust in our God, who allows us to accomplish things that seem bigger than we could ever imagine!"
—Craig Groeschel, pastor of Life.Church and author of #Struggles: Following Jesus in a Selfie-Centered World

—Steven Furtick, pastor of Elevation Church and New York Times best-selling author

"Chase the Lion fosters an expansive mind-set that drives our willingness to dream bigger than ever before. This mind-set is a choice, a decision, and a belief that God designed and created each of us for greatness, nothing less. If we aren’t courageous and bold enough to extend ourselves and believe that God will give us the capacity for greatness, we will have cheated our potential. This book is for anyone scared of not achieving the real greatness they are capable of."

Chase the Lion by Mark Batterson is based on the Old Testament story in 2 Samuel 23 about a warrior in the army of King David named Benaiah. Those who read Batterson's 2006 best seller are familiar with Benaiah---who chased a lion into a pit on a snowy dayand then killed it.

But there is more that is known of Benaiah, and a bigger lesson to be learned from his action with the lion. Most people would run from a lion, but Benaiah chased it. He overcame his fear and went after the personification of it.

This is what Batterson is saying in this sequel to In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day. Benaiah chased his fear, faced his fear, and used it as an opportunity to move forward. For Benaiah, becoming King Davids bodyguard and eventually the Commander-in-Chief of Israels army under David's son, King Solomon. Batterson says that your dreams should be so big they scare you. He says that 'Chase the Lion' is not just a catch phrase, but a radical approach to life. The fear of failure prevents one from seizing opportunity by the mane and conquering all fear. You cannot succeed if you are afraid of failure, but you have to accept that you may fail several times.

Do I agree? Yes and no...but my opinion does not really matter for a book review. I know many people who have huge dreams that may feel overwhelming. For those, this book can be a huge inspiration to never give up "chasing the lion" until ultimate success. For others, like myself, there are no grandiose dreams and we are quite content. I do, however, love to cheer on others, and I recommend this book. Not only is it great for those who feel God has called them to greater things, but I enjoyed reading it and felt inspired. Even the smaller dreams and dreamers need encouragement. I admit that I did prefer 'In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day' but 'Chase The Lion' did engage my attention and was well-written.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Waterbrook-Multnomah "Blogging For Books" program at no cost to myself. However, I was not required to write a positive review.

I'll tell you what; Multnomah/Waterbrook has put out some stellar books this September! I am amazed by all of them that I've read so far.

This one, Chase The Lion, is a Dream-Pursuer's fuel. It's thought provoking stories within the story stir up hope and inspire you to dream and keep dreaming. This book belongs on your bookshelf because it's one that you'll go back to time and time again. It wont go out of date. It's content is biblical, it's real-life, it's genuine. Mark Batterson's writing style is fresh, like he's sitting in your living room having a conversation about dreaming your dream with you. I can't tell you how many quotes I posted to FaceBook in even just the first chapters. Truth is truth and there's no avoiding it. We live our lives through story and that's how Batterson relates his message here; through story.

This is a MUST READ, MUST OWN book!

"Too often the church complains about culture instead of creating it. The energy we spend on criticism is being stolen from creativity. Its sideways energy. We need fewer commentators and more innovators. I try to live by Michelangelos maxim: criticize by creating. Quit complaining about whats wrong, and do something that makes a difference!" -Chase The Lion @markbatterson

"God honors big dreams because big dreams honor God." -Chase The Lion

"No conflict. No story. We accept that fact when it comes to movies. Epic movies demand epic conflict. Thats what makes them epic! And whats true of great movies is true of great lives. Great conflict cultivates great character. Of course, its easier to watch on the screen than it is to walk through it. If you want to live an epic life, you have to overcome some epic challenges. You have to take some epic risks, make some epic sacrifices. For David it was picking a fight with Goliath. For Benaiah it was chasing the lion." -Chase The Lion

(I was given a copy of this book through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. In all honesty, I fell in love with this book. I didn't read the first one--In the Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day--but this one caught my attention and kept it. Love it! And yes, another copy will be purchased and on my coffee table.)

What can you expect when you pick up a book written by Mark Batterson? You will get sound Biblical teaching in a way that youve never heard it before. You will become challenged to live a bolder, more purpose-driven life. You will learn a variety of anecdotal information about science, history, culture and more. And, you will have a thoroughly enjoyable read!

This is a story about dreaming bigand not limiting God. Batterson encourages us to dream so big that our dreams scare us and that they would be impossible to achieve without God. Batterson has a lot of credibility with this message since he has chased many lions, dreamed many big dreams and seen many miraculous things happen in his life!

Batterson is so brilliant and so well read that he sprinkles so many anecdotes about well-known people throughout this book: Benjamin Franklin, Billy Graham, John Wesley, Wilson Bentley (the famous snowflake photographer), George Washington Carver, Paul Tudor Jones, Ed Catmull (from Pixar Studios), Albert Schweitzer and many, many more! But, they are probably not the typical stories you have heard about these individuals.

Two of my favorite ideas from the book are:

"Just because something isn't part of your life plan doesn't mean it's not part of your destiny. When David took harp lessons as a kid, he never imagined that those lessons would someday position him as a member of King Saul's court. As he practiced with his slingshot while tending sheep, it never crossed his mind that this skill set would catapult him international limelight. Even when David was hiding out in caves as a fugitive, God was deepening his emotional capacity to write Psalms that would pull heartstrings thousands of years later....God is working His good, pleasing, and perfect plan for your life in a thousand ways you aren't even aware of. Everything in your past is preparation for something in your future. The God who works all things together for good will leverage every experience, every skill, every mistake, and every bit of knowledge you have acquired.

An inheritance is what you leave for someone. A legacy is what you leave in someone. Legacy isn't measured by what you accomplish during your lifespan. Legacy is measured by the lives that are affected by your life long after you are gone.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for this fair and unbiased review.

If your dream isn't destined to fail without God, Mark Batterson claims that your dream is too small. In Chase the Lion, Batterson explores David's mighty men, mentioned in 2 Samuel 23, and in particular, Benaiah. These courageous men were risk-takers and recognized that the Lord orchestrated great battle victories as they served their king in fearless faithfulness and power.

Benaiah inspired Batterson's previous book, In a Pit with A Lion on a Snowy Day. Benaiah killed two lionlike Moabites and then followed a lion into a snowy pit and killed it in 1 Chronicles 11:22 and 2 Samuel 23:20. In this book, Batterson writes that "God is in the recycling business. He recycles past experiences and uses them to prepare us for future opportunities."

With Chase the Lion, Batterson demonstrates that the snowy pit, failures, and adverse circumstances can become the catalyst for great dreams that can only be achieved through the extraordinary efforts of a team of people and with God leading the way.

Although God did not give Benaiah a dream of greatness, God gave David a promise that he would be King of Israel, and Benaiah acted on God's promise, in essence living out his dream of serving mightily within David's dream as a team member.

"The key to dreaming big is thinking long. And the bigger the dream, the longer the time line. When you think in terms of eternity, you should have some dreams that can't be accomplished in your lifetime." (p. 106)

David's dream included the coming Messiah.

Batterson shares the incredible stories of dreamers like David and his mighty men; Wilbur and Orville Wright; John Kilcullen, the founder of the For Dummies books; his dream of National Community Church, the megachurch where he serves as lead pastor in Washington, D.C, and many other instances of greatness from ordinary men and women.

Batterson candidly shares his failures and successes. He recognizes that the failures led him to found National Community Church and the establishment of the church's eight campuses, a coffeehouse, The Miracle Theatre, and the DC Cream Center.

Chase the Lion is a stirring call to action for today's Christian.

"Jesus didn't die just to keep you safe.

He died to make you dangerous!

    ...

    Chase the lion!" (p. 218)

May you fearlessly "Chase the Lion."

I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
