Several years ago my wife and I took part in a monthly Changes That Heal study that we did with a few other people from our organization. Dr. Cloud takes the reader step-by-step through the four basic tasks of becoming mature image bearers of God - bonding to others, separating from others, sorting out good and bad in ourselves and others, and becoming an adult. Dr. Cloud not only explains and describes each task, he also identifies the problems that result when we fail to accomplish that task and shows us what changes to make in our lives in order to bring about healing. Although I enjoyed the people I met within the book study, I really struggled reading this book. I felt the book was rather boring and not that useful to me. Perhaps I am inclined to give most books on this subject matter a poor review since it is my preference to read nonfiction books containing more theology and less psychology. My wife, on the other hand, found Changes That Heal to be very beneficial, and I can understand why many might like such a book.

When I started my pre-seminary undergraduate work I was in a place in my life were I was suffering horribly from some significant losses in my life and I was paying the price for some very self destructive behaviors and attitudes. A professor of mine recommended I read this book. I will say that it changed my life. Nearly 18 years later I continue to minister in a lay capacity at a mental health clinic. Often I will "prescribe" this book to individuals who are in treatment. I have never had someone tell me they have not received some value from it. I often hear what I have said many times. That is, "It changed my life."

This book has been very helpful in identifying traits of mine that may be due to my past. It puts words to how I feel or respond to different situations. Once I gain that understanding, then I am free to see and recognize the truth about myself, and then apply God's truth to my heart and life.

This book is just what I needed at this stage of my life. I am learning to set boundaries ("Boundaries" by Cloud & Townsend), and know I need to change some of my thoughts and following that some behaviours (which arise out of these thoughts).
